Have you ever wondered about how much water it takes to grow some of your favorite foods? In this class learners will watch a slideshow and listen to a quick lecture about the amounts of water taken to grow produce and meats. Once students have a basic understanding of this concept they will look at the water used to create a typical American menu and compare it to their own typical food choices. We will then discuss some simple changes we can make to our diets to cut down on water...
Students will understand that all foods require water and will be able to calculate the amount of water several meals require.
I specialize in finding fun twists to standard curriculum to help my students build critical thinking skills as well as math skills. By adding a new twist to a familiar topic we can expand our thinking to include new possibilities. I have taught math to homeschool students for the last 16 years and during that time I have developed many teaching techniques and hands-on projects to help students explore concepts in new and exciting ways. Every year I enjoy finding and creating fun and thought-provoking activities to practice in April for Earth Week. I'm happy to have the opportunity to bring this option to Outschool!
The day before class I will post documents to be printed. Students should have these documents as well as a pencil.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Students should be able to add 3-digit numbers with carrying and subtract 3-digit numbers with borrowing.
