Class Experience

In this multi-day class, we'll be reading the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia series: The Magician's Nephew. The class time will be used to discuss what we read in the previous days, clear up any confusion that could have popped up, and think/look at the text in a critical manner to really try and understand C.S. Lewis' unique writing style from the 20th century!

I'll open class with a few minutes of an open floor where students can tell me their initial thoughts from the chapters they were assigned and take note of any questions they want answered. I'll lead a discussion that begins with answering their questions, then we'll discuss any symbolism, reoccurring themes, and any guesses to what could take place in the future chapters.

It's important for me to create a safe and friendly environment for all students to speak openly about their thoughts on the book. In literature, there is hardly a right or wrong interpretation of a text so all comments and opinions are welcomed!

1st meeting: getting to know everyone and introduction to the world of Narnia!
2nd meeting: ch 1-2
3rd meeting: ch 3-4
4th meeting: ch 5-6
5th meeting: ch 7-9
6th meeting: ch 10-11
7th meeting: ch 12-13
8th meeting: ch 14-15
Learning Goals
What I want to happen is for students to begin to look at novels in a critical manner and to look beneath the surface words. I would like for my students to leave this camp wanting to deeply examine the future novels they'll be reading, or even get inspiration for their own creative writing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Jasmine and I love English! With a BA in English Literature, it's a huge goal of mine to inspire students to cultivate their own reading habits and grow to love reading and writing as much as I do.
I teach classes for students of all ages about phonics, basic grammar and good punctuation habits, and how to outline essays like a college student. I am also a huge advocate for creative writing and heavily partake in novel writing myself, so I would love to occasionally teach creative writing classes and even hold book clubs during summer and winter breaks!
I feel accomplished when students understand a concept they used to struggle with before. I like to take the time to make sure that no student is left behind in my lessons and that the concepts are understood and taught in the way that best suits my students.
On the weekends or when I'm not a teacher, I am a wedding photographer in California and enjoy reading at the beach or watching the latest film releases at the movie theaters!
