Tusker Power! Ancient Elephant Fossil Exploration
Explore Natural History: University of Nebraska State Museum
We'll explore the stories and science held within the fossils of two prehistoric elephants who once roamed America’s heartland and leave with a puzzle in hand!
Class experience
This class is held within our Elephant Hall gallery that holds seven full size ancient elephant fossil skeletons. You really are able to come and visit the ancient wild elephants who once freely roamed America’s heartland. We explore the finders and fossils of two prehistoric pachyderms – the mammoth and the gomphothere - to "see" their changing world. We examine the amazing life record these giants left by looking at their fossilized bones and teeth. Your student will meet “Archie”,...
Students will: - practice the inquiry process skills of observation and questioning; - be introduced to the science of Paleontology; -engage in discussion and develop an enriched understanding on how paleontology helps us to better understand our natural world.
Our Museum Educators Annie, Jen, and Molly have years of experience in communicating science to young learners. As we share the teaching duties of each of our programs you may get a chance to have each one of us interact with your student. As educators we have a variety of strengths, which brings a lovely bit of variety to the learning. Meet Ms. Molly! "Hello. I hold a master’s degree in Archaeological Studies and have worked in museum education and visitor services since 2013. I’ve had the chance to excavate a Roman site in Italy, teach English in China, and work on an organic farm in Panama. I have always been passionate about making science accessible and love to explore cross-cultural connections in all our classes. One of my teaching strengths is that I have an uncanny ability to answer random questions – I just love the challenge! I enjoy hiking, traveling, sports, and guarantee to solve any standard Rubik's Cube in under 90 seconds." Meet Ms. Jen! "I have worked in museum education since 2016. I love bugs and creepy crawly creatures of all kinds. I have my masters in Entomology where I got to deeply study my passion – beetles! I have worked as an entomologist in museum collections in Nebraska and New Mexico. When you love bugs, you love to spend time outside exploring nature and that is what I love most as I hike and garden. I promise to share my passion for science with your students with great calm and kindness. Because, science rocks!" Meet Ms. Annie! "I have been working as a museum educator for over 10 years. I am passionate about learning and asking questions and helping others to do the same. I am a visual learner so I use my Masters in Art Education to create science programs rich in visuals and activities that allow us to reach all types of learners. I am the lucky mom to two great humans, an experienced filmmaker, and I hate to bake. Too much precise measuring. I strongly believe laughter is the best medicine and so endeavor to bring humor and fun, as well as really solid science, to each and every one of our programs."
Once you have registered we will send you a one-sheet elephant puzzle for you to print out so your scholar can cut out and complete during or after the program.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
