Remembering the details and events of a story is made fun and easy by creating a Pop song in this 2-day course. Learners can take these skills beyond our class into future readings put to the tune of the latest Pop hits!

Description

Class Experience

Learners will recall the plot, details, events, characters, and form of a story (intro, rising action, climax, denouement/falling action, and conclusion) to recall, assess comprehension, and utilize higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) for creating and reinventing a Pop melody with new lyrics. Each learner will also be able to aurally identify a Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, and Bridge of any Pop song so they can rewrite lyrics of other songs for story learning in the future.
Although I am a professional multi-instrumental musician and music educator, I have a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. I train classroom teachers all over the US with in-person and online classes in how to integrate music into all subjects and socio-emotional learning with ukulele and guitar. I love music-making for successful learning!
For Day 1 homework, learners will read or watch the chosen story to further add plot, details, events, characters, and form beyond what were already discussed in class, as well as listen to the chosen Pop song to familiarize themselves with the melody and song form of Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, and Bridge. This will prepare them for Day 2 where we plug the story into the Pop song for collaborative songwriting and story comprehension. 
Ability to access YouTube will allow learners to pull up karaoke tracks to sing the story lyrics with their favorite Pop songs. We will collaborate on lyrics using Google Docs.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Story and Pop song form comprehension skills will be assessed through participation in Day 1's homework (listening to the Pop song and reading or watching the story) being applied to Day 2's class. If a student is struggling with particular comprehension skills I will contact parents with a report of resources to help further develop those particular skills.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
The chosen story will be appropriate for learners ages 8-12 years old.
