US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
What Will Be Taught? Game Design in Scratch: Students will learn how to create an interactive Thanksgiving-themed game using Scratch, where players will hide a turkey using 5 clickable spots. Coding Basics: They will grasp key programming concepts such as event handling, loops, sprite manipulation, and game mechanics to make the game interactive and engaging. Game Customization: Learners will discover how to adjust the difficulty (e.g., by resizing spots) and personalize the theme by changing the turkey sprite and backgrounds. This hands-on approach ensures that kids understand both the creative and technical aspects of game development. What Topics Will You Cover? Scratch Interface: Introduction to the Scratch platform and its coding blocks for game development. Interactive Design: Learn how to create clickable objects and incorporate simple animations (e.g., moving turkey, changing spots). Basic Coding Concepts: Event Handling (e.g., when a spot is clicked, hide the turkey). Loops and Sequences (repeating actions and sequencing events). Sprite Customization (changing the turkey sprite and other visual elements). Testing and Tweaking: Understanding how to test and improve the game, adjusting difficulty, and adding new features. How is Your Class Structured? Introduction (5-10 minutes): Overview of Scratch and the game mechanics. The instructor will explain the project step-by-step, introducing key coding concepts like event handling and sprite manipulation. Building the Game (30-40 minutes): Students will work on their game creation by following along with the instructor's demonstrations. They will design the gameplay, create clickable spots, and program the turkey's movements. Customization (15-20 minutes): Once the basic game is set up, the instructor will guide students on how to customize the difficulty and theme (e.g., resizing spots, changing turkey sprites, or backgrounds). Testing and Sharing (10-15 minutes): Kids will test their games, receive feedback from the instructor, and share their creations with the class. This provides an opportunity for feedback and ideas for improvement. How Will You Teach? Live, Interactive Demonstrations: I will guide students step-by-step through the creation process, providing visual demonstrations on how to build the game. Hands-On Coding: After each demonstration, students will have time to code independently, with real-time support available. I will provide help if students get stuck and encourage them to experiment with their projects. Personalized Guidance: Throughout the class, I will interact directly with learners to address questions, give feedback, and suggest improvements based on their progress. What's Your Teaching Style? My teaching style is engaging, interactive, and supportive. I believe in learning by doing, so the focus will be on creating a game from scratch, where kids actively participate in the coding process. I provide positive reinforcement and create an environment where kids feel encouraged to experiment, make mistakes, and learn through trial and error. I balance structured guidance with creative freedom, allowing students to explore their own ideas while still learning the essential coding concepts. How Much Will Learners Get to Interact with You? Lecture & Demonstrations (15-20 minutes): During the lecture portion, I will explain key coding concepts and show how to implement them in the game. Hands-On Work (30-40 minutes): After each demonstration, students will have time to work on their own games while I circulate to offer help and answer questions. Q&A & One-on-One Assistance (Throughout the Class): Learners can ask for help anytime. I will offer personalized support, helping with coding challenges and guiding them through more complex tasks. Game Sharing (10-15 minutes): At the end of the class, students will have a chance to share their games with the group. This is an opportunity for peer feedback, discussion, and inspiration for further improvements.
Learning Goals
Learn Basic Game Mechanics: Master key coding concepts like event handling, loops, and sprite interactions to bring the game to life.
Problem-Solving & Creativity: Develop creative problem-solving skills by customizing and tweaking the game to make it more fun or challenging.
