During this course, students will read Towers Falling by Andrea Beach. We will meet and discuss the reading and the story. Topics we will discuss are: ** The facts about what happened on 9-11 ** The perception we have on different races and the harm in judging by race ** Building relationships and the importance of friendship ** How trauma affects families and how it can change things ** Poverty ** Our place in the community Students will be assigned a section to read between classes and then we will discuss them together in our group meeting. The teacher will have prepared discussion questions to discuss. ** This is a sensitive topic and can be emotional. I encourage parents to check common sense media and/or read this book to be sure this is the right fit for their child. I have read this book with 4th-6th graders but would always recommend parents be aware. Students will be reading from the book between classes. Hi there! I am so excited to be here and offering both technology courses and ELA themed courses. I have many great options coming to you as I build more classes.
I have been a teacher for 15 years and have taught from Kindergarten- 8th grade in public schools. In these experiences, I have taught all subjects but am the most energized and passionate about teaching ELA (reading, phonics, vocabulary, etc.). My belief is that students who feel good learn best. Students who feel valued by their teacher and feel like they are an integral part of the class want to participate and engage in the materials. Building relationships is key to success.
