Third Grade Math - Foundations Happily Built in Eight Weeks
Class experience
US Grade 2 - 3
Please see the 'syllabus'... it's a clear demonstration of how everything gets pulled together in this course! Students will receive direct instruction in mathematics, starting with numeracy, daily. Practice work (at the time and for that afternoon) is assigned and assessed daily by the instructor, leading to the next class where it is reviewed, new material is taught, and new work is assigned. Students receive all instruction, immediate feedback on practice work, and assessment by a...

Unit 1Numeracy and the Two Basic Operations for Third GradeNumeracy and the Two Basic Operations for Third Grade8 lessons2 WeeksWeek 1Lesson 1NumeracyWe will enjoy getting to know one another (Mr. Brown is assessing while running the fun) using patterns, counting, and other puzzles. This will provide a starting point for each child and the group that Mr. Brown will take to class 2.Lesson 2AddingOnce again, under the guise of patterning, Mr. Brown will sneak in some lessons on adding. Students who have already mastered this will move on to carrying or even multiplying while others will enjoy building a better foundation from which to add.Lesson 3Moving Forwards and BackwardsThe patterns will start to move backwards... subtracting will be quietly introduced. On screen individualized work will also begin using Mathletics.Lesson 4The Mystery NumberDay 4 on the week is always a bit of extra fun - today's game will be 'Mystery Number'. Students will take on the role of the teacher as the learning gets flipped around for a day of excitement.Week 2Lesson 5Place Value and SubtractionThis week everything is getting smaller, colder, etc. We will be borrowing from larger units and coming into smaller units. Patterning will again be used, but also multiple real world examples to show how subtraction makes sense - including borrowing for those who are ready!Lesson 6Going Down Down DownMoving everything to zero... that's the opening game... but this will be a foundational lesson in the algorithm used for the subtraction operation.Lesson 7Borrowing from Zero...I know that's not possible - but, somehow, it is! This lesson will focus on what happens when we have to borrow from a 0 sitting in the tens or hundreds place.Lesson 8Below Ground LevelWe're digging holes, understanding extreme weather, and looking at all sorts of situations that involve being below zero... number lines are coming out and we'll subtract to get deeper... or add to get back to ground level!Unit 2Patterns Patterns EverywherePatterns Patterns Everywhere4 lessons1 WeekWeek 3Lesson 9Everything GrowsIt's a week of patterning - but this time we're actually going to call them patterns and not be sneaky about it! Time to see math's beauty using addition and subtraction. Today will have single step patterns but watch out... multiple step patterns are coming.Lesson 10The Two StepFor those who are ready - two and three step patterns. For those who aren't - sticking with what we know!Lesson 11That Got Big, Fast!Mr. Brown is going to sneak the idea of multiplication into some patterns... and provide real world examples as a single celled creature grows bigger and bigger. Or that time the neighbor offered one cent of pay doubling each day... how much did that become by the end of the month?Lesson 12How Did that Number Get There?Reverse engineer the pattern and find the rule!Unit 3FractionsFractions6 lessons2 WeeksWeek 4Lesson 13FractionsWe're going to spend time getting 'used' to fractions. Re-introducing what a fraction is (it's division and division is a fraction) but also drawing fractions, identifying fractions, and learning to love them.Lesson 14Fractions - The Parts Get SmallerLearning how the denominator grows while the pieces get smaller.Lesson 15Fractions - Equal FractionsUnderstanding how 1/4 is equal to 2/8 etc...Lesson 16Fractions - Fun BuildUsing Lego we will have a live fraction building challenge... after all, it's Day 4 - time to connect to real life!Week 5Lesson 17Fractions - EquivalencyToday the students build the equal fractions... they're limitless!Lesson 18Fractions and MoneySo... a quarter is a quarter of a dollar? Today we get out the money and make the key connections.Unit 4Probability, Money, Percent, and Fractions Together - A Winning CombinationProbability, Money, Percent, and Fractions Together - A Winning Combination10 lessons3 WeeksWeek 5Lesson 19Combinations to a Dollar (100)How many ways can we make a whole? Using both fractions and money it's time to make things whole again.Lesson 20Show Me the MoneyDay 4 of the week... let's build some money amounts.... in a fun game!Week 6Lesson 21Making ChangeTime to bring back that subtraction... while making change with our money.Lesson 22Probability: Heads or Tails... Connection ClassIt is 50/50? What does 50/50 mean? What if we throw the coin more than once?Lesson 23Probability: Card GamesWhat's the likelihood the next number we draw is the one we want? Applying concrete mathematical thinking to card games.Lesson 24Probability: ApplicationIt's a kid friendly probability festival... guess what's next? Use your math to win the festival games!Week 7Lesson 25Probability & Fractions: One and the Same? How has this whole discussion of probability been related to fractions?Lesson 26Part Numbers: DecimalsBuilding numbers in to the tenths and hundredths using the probability and fractions connection.Lesson 27Part Numbers and PercentHow do we express percentages? What do they mean?Lesson 28Numbers Numbers EverywhereToday we'll explore the real world and different careers that use percentages, fractions, small numbers, and large numbers. How do numbers appear in our lives?Unit 5Word ProblemsWord Problems4 lessons1 WeekWeek 8Lesson 29Word Problems: Organizing The Key InformationWhat is the word problem asking us to solve? What pieces of information do we need? This class is all about figuring that out.Lesson 30World Problems : Writing a SolutionHow do we show our answer so that our teacher, or even ourselves going back, know exactly what our thoughts and conclusion were? Find out today.Lesson 31Mixed Bag: When Problems Require Two or More OperationsDon't get booked in to one single 'unit of study'. Math, in the real world, is glorious and needs you to think in many directions!Lesson 32Bringing It All TogetherTime to take the whole course and put it together. Mr. Brown will present a multi-step problem, taken from real life. Can you solve it? Expect some of our favorite games from the course to appear again as well!
- Students will achieve a strong foundation in third grade numeracy. - Students will become proficient with patterns, including the ability to describe pattern rules. - Students will start to see the world through a mathematical lens by applying their understanding of numbers, fractions, probability, and part numbers to the world around them. This, in turn, leads to strong math achievement levels and proficiency.
Mr. Brown, M.Ed., is the founder of Headwaters Academy in Ontario. After a year of attending Headwaters his students achieve, on average, three grade levels ahead in mathematics (Canadian Achievement Test). He is an expert mathematics teacher.
Homework Offered
Students will have time to complete work during the session for live feedback - extra work is offered and some students choose to complete work between sessions. Maximum 30 minutes per session but in reality is much closer to 10 minutes. Feedback is automatic and immediate most of the time (from Mathletics) and teacher reviews problem areas with individual students or the group as necessary.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Assessments are not required but the teacher will provide online and/or written tests and tasks that students can complete by request. Course includes a subscription to Mathletics.com.Grades Offered
Teacher will provide written comments for students on strengths, weaknesses, and areas of growth by request.
Students should have gridded blank paper, pencils, rulers, and erasers available.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Students will use Mathletics.com. They will be given an account and password and this program provides immediate feedback and allows me to assign work and see progress. Mathletics does not take any information from the student other than their first name. If you wish, I can register them under a pseudonym.
Mr. Brown is an expert teacher in all things 'real and authentic'. Bored (almost to tears) by the traditional school system, Mr. Brown has spent his career building exciting schools and programs. When he's not teaching he can be found flying...
