The World at War!

In this 8 week course, we will be examining the causes, outcomes, technology, effects, and people from World War 1, the interwar years, and World War 2 from a variety of perspectives. It will culminate in a research presentation.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Intermediate Level
This class will cover WWI through WWII, including, the battles, technology, causes, legacy, important figures and themes. The specific topics that are covered are listed in the syllabus. We will do a good bit of lecture, but we will be looking at video clips, slide shows, and presentations. You will be creating propaganda, research-based presentations and essays, taking notes,a nd be involved in discussions. 

I have a laid-back and open teaching style, I respect everyone's opinions, and I expect respect of other people's opinions, and this class should be a safe, non-judgemental place where can discuss, sometimes difficult topics with reverence and respect.

Causes of WWI
 Objective 1: Identify and explain the long-term causes of World War I: militarism, alliances,
imperialism, and nationalism.
- Objective 2: Analyze how the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand acted as a catalyst for
the war.
- Objective 3: Evaluate how the alliance system escalated the conflict into a world war

Major Players and Alliances
 Objective 1: Map the Central Powers and Allied Powers and their key nations.
- Objective 2: Discuss the roles of prominent leaders such as Kaiser Wilhelm II, Woodrow Wilson,
and King George V.
- Objective 3: Assess the impact of alliances on military strategies.

Warfare and Technology
 - Objective 1: Describe the conditions and characteristics of trench warfare.
- Objective 2: Analyze the impact of new technologies, including tanks, chemical weapons,
airplanes, and machine guns, on warfare.
- Objective 3: Evaluate how these innovations influenced the war's outcomes and casualties.

Life on the home front
 - Objective 1: Explore how civilians contributed to the war effort through labor, rationing, and
propaganda.
- Objective 2: Evaluate the role of women and the war's impact on societal norms.

Learning Needs
There will be several different ways for students to learn, from projects, art work, lecture, guided notes, study guides.
Parental Guidance
We will be talking about the holocaust, and possibly showing images and video from the Holocaust We will also be looking at images of war and battles, which may be disturbing for some students.
Pre-Requisites
Should have some knowledge of early 20th century world history
Supply List
A list of topics and expectatios will be emailed and given to the students on the first day. 

A note book if they like to write notes instead of type.
