Class Experience

The rock cycle ...one of Earth's wonders but what exactly is it and how does it work? In this class you will discover the mysteries of rocks. In the beginning of class we will start with some rock formation pictures and students are going to try to figure out how they were formed to start their critical thinking skills. Then we will learn the three different types of rocks, sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks. This will be done by talking about how they form, showing pictures and examples of each type of rock. This will be done in a lecture style with students being asked questions to check for understanding. Then students will be broken into three groups-one for each rock type. They will start by talking about what makes their rock type the best as well as how it forms. They will then present their ideas to the rest of the class. This helps reinforce learning by teaching information to others. We will then finish class by looking at the same rock formation pictures and use their critical thinking skills to reevaluate whether they were correct at the beginning of class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Science, Social Studies, Math, Writing, and Art... These are my passions. I am the type of teacher who believes that students learn by doing, by creating projects that develop a love of learning. Just reading or hearing information is not enough, one must interact, create, wonder, and become inspired to find their passions in life. Learning how to think critically and having a class where hands on learning is promoted gives positive emotions to the lessons creating a memory that will last a lifetime.

I am a 2nd/3rd grade teacher in Montana for the past five years, starting on my 6th year. I love teaching and love the variety that comes from being in an elementary room. This has given me lots of experience in developing my own science, social studies, and writing units that I see that encourage students to continue to learn on their own even after they left my classroom. I have received my degree in Elementary Education and Earth Science from Montana State University Billings. I also have experience from working at a wildlife refuge for a strong science background as well as running a local science fair program at my school the past 5 years as well. .

Something you may not know about me is I love to go rockhounding! Rockhounding is where you go look for interesting or unique rocks-my favorites are going crystal hunting. There is great locations in Montana where I have found quartz, citrine, peridot, and sapphire.

I look forward to meeting you in my classes where you never know what you might discover or find a love of learning for!
