Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
I love history and find that reading about it can be be (almost) as exciting as a trip in a time machine would be. Each week, learners will read a different historical novel. We will take a look at the author, the time period it was written (if different from the setting), and learn about what the characters and setting tell us about that moment in history. Learners will be given the opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions about the story and historical context on the classroom page. The first lesson will consist of a short video lecture about the historical context, author, and any relevant information about the book. The second lesson for the class will be discussion questions, with possible short homework assignments, which will be posted on the classroom page.

Come and join us as we take the challenge to read a different book each week!

Week 1 The Great Gatsby - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Week 2 The Fountains of Silence - Ruta Sepetys
Week 3 The Downstairs Girl - Stacey Lee
Week 4 Between Shades of Gray - Ruta Sepetys
Week 5 Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
Week 6 The Henna Wars - Adiba Jaigirdar
Week 7 A Raisin in the Sun - Lorraine Hansberry
Week 8 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Ken Kesey
Week 9 To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
Week 10 The Book Thief - Markus Zusak

Each week, by Wednesday evening (9pm PST) -

-I will email each student a link that weeks lecture and assignments. This will be on YouTube and is in a private account that is embedded into the Outschool classroom page.
- Assignments will consist of discussion and essay questions, short research topics, Youtube videos, and worksheets. These will be posted on the classroom page.
- In my flex classes, each family can determine the level of participation in the course.
- Communication will be done through the Outschool classroom.
-I will check in with each student several times during the week to check on progress of the homework, address any questions, or to engage in a discussion about the topic covered. Each student is encouraged to message (through the Outschool classroom) me anytime they have any questions or thoughts about the class.
- Each week, there may be additional articles, videos, or pictures that will be posted to the classroom page to engage students in open conversations about that weeks topic.
-Please message me before the start of class if you have any questions.
