Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 5
Come along with sisters, Katie and Lauren as they vacation in Venice Italy. During our live sessions (two per week for 7 weeks), students will engage in a discussion of the chapters, as well as participate in activities that support learning about Venice through activities spanning different subject areas such as geography, science, and art.

Students will be exposed to different skill sets through activities that address different content areas. I will employ hands-on strategies, discussion, visuals through video clips and power points, and reading strategies. Outside of our class meetings, students can expect to read a chapter to be prepared for the next week’s lessons. Students will travel to Venice through the story of a fictional family going on vacation. The unit study is a full unit study. This class is meant to supplement with me teaching some of the activities as the parents choose whether to take on the rest.

Students do not need prior knowledge of Venice, Italy. They will be exposed on a "surface" level. Your child can be at any reading level. They will not be asked to read during our live session. They will need to be able to read outside of the live session, but this can be done via read aloud by parents. For example, week 1 we will be doing lessons that go along with chapter 1, so please have that chapter read beforehand. Week 2, we will be doing lessons from chapter 2 so you will read chapter 2 together at home, and so on.

At home each family will download the THS Venice Curriculum set which includes:

A 7 chapter, easy reader fiction story about a family that travels from their hometown of San Diego, California to Venice, Italy. We follow the ups and downs of our main character, Lauren, and her family while they explore many Venetian sites, food, culture, history, geography, art, and so much more.

Parent/Teacher Activity Guide incorporating hundreds of lessons that go along with the story as you read along. For a free lesson example check out www.thetravelinghomeschool.com

A student workbook which will be where your child will keep all of the work they do at home and in class.

What to expect:

Each family will be able to purchase our fully downloadable Venice curriculum series at a discounted rate of $50. You will have access to all of the above contents. We will not be able to cover all of the material from the guide in class but families are encouraged to follow along at home and incorporate other lessons that we might not be able to do when we meet as a group, but of course this is up to the discretion of the family and their wants and need for this class. Occasionally we will have an at home project that the child will do at home and then we will come together as a class to talk about their projects and allow the children to share their work and creations.

I have a multiple subject teaching credential and have taught k-12 in the public school system as well as in a homeschooling environment. I have traveled extensively and in homeschooling my own children through travel, I have been able to design curriculum that really helps children learn through experience. We can do this by actually physically going to a destination or by creating an amazing virtual experience.
