This class will combine a folk tale with STEM (engineering). I'll read The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and then guide students to create a bridge using DOTS candy & toothpicks. The strength of their bridge will be tested by adding pennies.

Combining engineering design with literature will help learners be engaged in this STEM class. We'll read The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Then I'll show a few vacation pictures of Norway. After that, students will consider what shape would be best to build a bridge using candy and toothpicks. As time permits, students will test the strength of their bridge using pennies. Students will improve their understanding of the design process by creating and testing a bridge made of candy. This bridge will be inspired by a folk tale from another culture, Norway.
I have taught this class to a multiage group at summer camp. They really liked it. I'm looking forward to doing this with YOU!
Students will need to purchase the following: -large bag of gum drops or one box of Dots candy -a box of toothpicks -5-20 pennies Prices vary -minimal.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Toothpicks sometimes break. Please monitor your students if splintering/safety is a concern.
