Class Experience

Welcome traveller, to the legendary Silk Road, an ancient trade route that carried goods and ideas between Eastern and Western civilizations. Together we will explore a brief history of civilizations and re-enact the various roles of the major players along the silk road – merchants, nomads, explorers and many more.

I will be your humble guide on this epic adventure that will take us through dark jungles, vast deserts and bustling marketplaces from Java to London. But first, let’s set some things straight; this isn’t actually a road! It’s really an interconnected network of trade routes between all the major civilizations of antiquity.

Did you know that from this “road” originated some of humanity’s greatest myths such as Aladdin and Homer’s The Odyssey? Or that the Silk Road led to the bubonic plague, one of history’s most deadly events? It also helped save Buddhism! Spanning over 1500 years of fact and famed fiction, you will explore how the first global network changed the course of our story, and left impacts still felt today.
Learning Goals
1. Understand the importance of the Silk Road network and how it contributed to the rising complexity of humanity.
2. Explore a brief history of some of the major stops along the way: from the Han Dynasty in China, to the agrarian civilizations in Mesopotamia, to the societies in Europe racing toward the dawn of industrialization.
3. Re-enact the various roles of the major players along the silk road- merchants, nomads, explorers and many more.
4. Connect the lasting impacts of the Silk Road, it’s commerce and lore to our current world, to get a picture of how human interconnectedness and story-telling looks today.

Supply List
For our merchants of The Silk Road role-playing game, we will use digital dice, a virtual map/game board, and a deck of action/event cards. Everything that's required will be provided by the teacher.

We encourage costumes and props to help everyone get in the mood on this epic adventure (but it is not mandatory). We would love to see you dressed up as your favourite traveller, even if it is something as simple as a throw or towel transformed into a cape!
