Welcome to "The Science Behind 'the Last of Us' - Real Life Science of the Video Game Fungus"! If you've ever played The Last of Us and been intrigued by the terrifying yet fascinating Cordyceps fungus, then this class is perfect for you. In this one off, one-hour session, we'll delve deep into the real-life science behind this intriguing organism.

Throughout the session, we'll explore the lifecycle of the Cordyceps fungus, from its humble beginnings to its intricate methods of reproduction. We'll uncover how this fungus targets and infects various insect species, turning them into unwitting hosts for its spores. Prepare to be amazed as we uncover the intricate strategies Cordyceps has evolved to ensure its survival. The lesson will be taught presentation/lecture style, with images and slides, and key information presented my me, a biologist with a love of vide games myself. 

But what about humans? Could Cordyceps ever pose a threat to us? We'll tackle this question head-on, examining the current scientific understanding of the fungus's potential to infect humans. We'll discuss real-life examples of fungal infections and explore the factors that determine the likelihood of Cordyceps crossing the species barrier.

Parental Guidance
Although the video game and tv show 'The Last of Us' features violence and gore and have an 18 rating for a variety of reasons, this class looks only at the biology of the fungus featured in the show. There will be images of dead insects affected by the fungus, and screen grabs of some of the zombies featured in the show for comparison. We will be looking at the lifecycle of fungi, how they feed and communicate, and the likelihood of a worldwide infection. No other elements from the game/show will be referenced.
