Class Experience

Students will learn math vocabulary words guided by teacher instruction. Visual aids such as flashcards will be used as well as math manipulatives and visuals to provide a further understanding of vocabulary definitions. The teacher will guide instruction introducing the vocabulary word, provide correct pronunciation, spelling, and explain the definition followed by the mathematical symbol and mathematical examples to describe the meaning for complete comprehension. Time will be structured for teaching instruction (15 min.) and then student application through discussion and guided examples (10 min.). Students' depth of vocabulary meanings will be based on grade-level, with simple explanations and applications for younger grades and more complex descriptions and applications for older grades.

The following topics will be covered according to the schedule below:

Class 1:
-Introductions
-Instruction: Topics (numbers and operations): "Addition", "Equal", "Sum" and "Subtraction"
-Topic application through student Q&A based on examples provided

Class 2:
-A quick review of class 1 topics
-Instruction: Topics covered (measurement and data): "Clock", "Hour", "Minute", "Second"
-Topic application through student Q&A based on examples provided

Class 3:
-A quick review of topics learned in classes 1 and 2
-Instruction: Topics covered (numbers and operations): "Fact", "Factor", "Multiplication"
-Topic application through student Q&A based on examples provided

Class 4:
-A quick review of topics learned in classes 1-3
-Instruction: Topics covered (measurement and data): "Foot", "Inch", "Centimeter"
-Topic application through student Q&A based on examples provided

Class 5:
-A quick review of topics learned in classes 1-4
-Instruction: Topics covered (numbers and operations): "Fraction", "Numerator", "Denominator"
-Topic application through student Q&A based on examples provided

Class 6:
-A quick review of topics learned in classes 1-5
-Review of all topics (classes 1-4) with an interactive matching game
-Final thoughts, comments, questions of course
Learning Goals
The goal of this course is for students to have a full understanding of math vocabulary expressed both in mathematical symbol form as well as word form, to know how each symbol is applied in how it interacts with numbers and other words that hold the same meaning to complete mathematical expressions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Through my experience working with students in KG-8th grade math, I came to realize how many students do not understand the words of math. As a Title 1 math teacher, offering supplemental math support or students below grade level, I found students could comprehend math concepts better if they fully understood what math symbols and words in math problems actually mean to be able to execute expressions correctly.
