The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of the Lost Hero (a D&D-like adventure)

This is a collaborative storytelling game, much like Dungeons and Dragons. It is a game of vast possibilities where you learn to think carefully, to plan, to strategize, to persuade, to resolve conflict, and so much more, all while exploring memorable locales, meeting fascinating NPCs, and defeating truly frightening enemies. In this course, we will play in the realm of Hyrule using a simply, fast-paced system based on Dungeon World. This allows us to keep a strong pace and prioritize story over rules-clarifications and arithmetic. That leaves more time to become your favorite Hyrule hero, journey across the realm, through the vast and mysterious Kakariko Forest, into forboding and mind-bending dungeons, and find the lost Hero of Time before Ganon can swallow the lands in darkness. This course will give students a great deal of experience in the Powered by the Apocalypse-type games but using a homebrew system (by me, of course). The students will also grow close with the other students they are adventuring with and learn more to better communicate, work together, and treat one another with respect. Please note that this is an ongoing course as it is impossible to give a specific number of meetings because that depends how the story develops in the hands of the students. Compared to other campaigns, though, this is considered a long campaign (meaning likely 6+ months). If you must leave at some point, please don't worry about your fellow classmates. We will exit your character and bring in another student in a way that progresses the story. Note: You must have your video on for these sessions and be unmuted as often as you can. D&D is a game of community and collaboration, of experiencing, struggling, and laughing together. If you cannot actively participate, please do not enroll. Reach out to me if you have questions about this.

Other Details
Parental Guidance
Though there is combat in this game, it is described in words, not images. I will also ask and require students to be conscious of their descriptions, avoiding anything grotesque or inhumane.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
To prepare and run this course, I will use my experience and knowledge of TTRPGs and my own Powered by the Apocalypse system.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have spent much time playing in and running Dungeons and Dragons campaigns as well as many other TTRPGs. I also have much experience teaching these games to new players. As far as teaching children goes, I've spent over a decade teaching ages 8-18 in the classroom and have served in many roles from Master Teacher to Curriculum Developer to Network Trainer to Academy Headmaster (all with Great Hearts Academies).
