Class Experience

Meeting on a weekly basis, students will be introduced to 1-2 tunes across various genres of jazz and will participate in close listening and critical analysis exercises. Students will also be given the opportunity to select their own songs to be shared during the meeting (these do NOT have to be jazz). Students will be provided with a printout that contains examples of musical characteristics and appropriate terminology to guide them in analyzing their own selections before, during, and after the meetings.

This club is meant to be fun and recreational foremost, but it will encourage critical thinking skills that are essential to both musicians and music lovers. Like putting on glasses when you didn't know you needed them, gaining a deep understanding for the many nuances and layers within a piece allows us to hear more, feel more, and ultimately interact more meaningfully with music. These learned skills may be transferred across other mediums - visual art, architecture, design, theater, etc. - and hopefully help to cultivate lifelong relationships with art.

Teaching style is open and interactive, with an emphasis on group discussion and practical methods of concept implementation and maintenance.
