Class Experience

Volcanoes are so fascinating to learn about! I have taught about volcanoes for the past year here on Outschool and I am so excited to bring you this new class where we experiment with different ingredients to see which combination makes the best volcano!

Class Activities:
-Before we experiment, I will spend about 10 minutes discussing the parts of a volcano, what they look like, and what their functions are. This will also be a time for students to share with the class what they know about volcanoes as well.
- Next we will go through all of the ingredients and supplies needed for the volcano experiments. We we will also make predictions as to which volcano we think will be the most successful at erupting and the least successful.
- Together we will conduct each of the 3 volcano experiments and discuss what we see happening with each one and why we think that is occurring. I will teach students the science behind the different chemical reactions and explain why something is/or is not reacting.
-At the end of class, I will ask students what kind of ingredients they would put into an apple to get it to erupt. This is always a great conversation starter for how the learning can continue at home after class!

Learning Goals

Students will learn how volcanoes erupt and which ingredients react together to create their own apple volcanoes.

Parental Guidance
Parents may want to be present to oversee the handling of the ingredients used in the apple volcanoes. Vinegar, ketchup, and baking soda do cause chemical reactions. Please have an adult prepare the apples before class begins. See supply list section for details!
Supply List
-Liquid measuring cup for the vinegar
- A tray with depth (this will catch all of the ingredients erupting)
- Baking soda (will be used in all 3 volcanoes so a generous amount will be needed)
- 2 apples cored about 1/2 way out- I do this by cutting a circle in the top if the apple and then a spoon to clear out the inside. This must be done by an adult before class begins.)
- Food coloring (red, yellow, orange- either or all of these are fine)
- Dish soap
- A few tablespoons (used for the baking soda)
- Paper towels for any clean up
