US Grade 5 - 8
The world is full of beautiful colors and many can be explained with chemistry. Each week, we'll begin class by introducing the week's topic or theme, discussing what students already know about it, and then diving deep into the history, background, and chemistry concepts behind it. At the end of each class, students will have the opportunity to share what they found most interesting and answer questions to review what they've learned. This class is perfect for anyone who always wonder "why?" and "how?" --------------------------------- Weekly Topic List Week 1: Introduction to light and color Week 2: Why is the sky blue? Week 3: What elements give fireworks their colors? Week 4: Why are barns painted red? Week 5: Where do the colors used in paintings come from? Week 6: What elements give minerals their colors? Week 7: Why is the Statue of Liberty green? Week 8: How do we make foods different colors? --------------------------------- No prior knowledge is required to join this class. All you need is a desire to learn more about the chemistry of the world around us! Each week, students will receive a handout as a review and extension of the information we learned in class.

Parental Guidance
Some of the optional hands-on activities may require parent supervision depending on the level of the learner and the comfort of them using household items like food coloring, vinegar, and a flashlight. Supplemental videos for the hands-on activities are posted in the classroom via a link to an unlisted YouTube video (recorded by me) and for some topics, supplemental videos are shared via YouTube links as well. No account is required to view these videos and they are embedded in the OutSchool classroom.
Supply List
A one-page handout will be provided each week.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate in Science
I have a BS in chemistry and have done graduate work in both chemistry and science education. I am a certified Chemistry teacher (PA Chemistry Level II, Grades 7-12) with over two decades of experience tutoring and teaching chemistry in both formal (classroom) and informal (museums, science outreach) settings. I was also a homeschool parent for 2.5 years. I'm passionate about all things related to chemistry and work to learn as much as I can about any topic I'm teaching. My extensive background in chemistry allows me to answer even some of the most obscure "why?" questions that students come up with- and when I don't know the answer, I usually know where to find it!
