Taran wanted to be a hero, and looking after a pig wasn't exactly heroic, even though Hen Wen was an oracular pig. But the day that Hen Wen vanished, Taran was led into an enchanting and perilous world. With his band of followers, he confronted the Horned King and his terrible Cauldron-Born. These were the forces of evil, and only Hen Wen knew the secret of keeping the kingdom of Prydain safe from them. But who would find her first? *This class has no live meetings. In this flexible class, students will have the opportunity to read The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander. As they read, students will watch 4 videos from the instructor that teach important ELA skills, using the things they are reading in The Book of Three. Students will also be assigned 4 Google form worksheets to fill out as they read. Worksheets will be graded and feedback will be sent within a few days of submission. Feedback will include specific details on what they did well and follow up questions if necessary! The time required for this class will vary greatly depending on each student's reading speed. I always recommend that children read for half an hour each day and with that reading schedule, most students will be able to complete the class in 4-5 weeks.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their ability to read critically and to write about the things they read. They will also improve their writing skills as they answer questions about the reading.

Character Traits
-Learn about physical and personality traits
- Identify character traits of characters in The Book of Three
- After watching the video, students will read chapters 6-10 of The Book of Three and then complete the Google Form posted in the classroom. 16 mins of video lessons
Lesson 3:
Similes and Metaphors
- Learn to identify similes and metaphors
- After watching the video, students will read chapters 11-15 of The Book of Three and then complete the Google Form posted in the classroom. 10 mins of video lessons
Lesson 4:
Compare and Contrast
-Learn how to compare and contrast using a Venn diagram and a tree chart
-Compare and contrast characters from The Book of Three
- After watching the video, students will read chapters 16-19 of The Book of Three and then complete the Google Form posted in the classroom. 10 mins of video lessons

Parental Guidance
The Book of Three is high fantasy, which contains strong themes of good and evil. The bad guys in the book are evil and can be a little scary for more sensitive learners.

Learners will need a copy of The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander. They will also need to be able to type into a PDF on the computer or to print and handwrite a worksheet each week.
