Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
This is an upper-level neuroscience class wherein students would benefit from having some prior knowledge of the brain or having taken my Introduction to Neuroscience class. However, no specialized knowledge is needed; just curiosity and a love for learning.

Are monolingual and bilingual brains different? Is there any benefit to our brains (and lives) if we learn more than one language? In this class, students will learn the answers to these, and other interesting questions. First, we will explore how the human brain learns to comprehend and produce language. Second, we will progress to how adding languages anytime from birth through adulthood may change the brain, and in what way. We will use lots of examples from all around the world incorporating, culture and context to show that language learning does not occur in a vacuum. Students will be presented with the latest cutting-edge research on the brain and linguistics, and will learn about the fascinating research directions that scientists are exploring in this area.

The class will be part-instruction; I will be using a few power-point slides, media clips, and other resources to illustrate the concepts. The class will also be interactive and students will have ample opportunity for discussion/questions. Students will be encouraged to participate verbally or via chat. Students will be given resources before and after class to enable learning beyond the class.

A minimum of 3 students are needed for the class to run. In case the minimum isn't met, I will contact the parent(s) a day ahead of time to discuss transfer to another meeting time or a refund. Thank you for understanding.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Thank you for visiting my profile. I am a neuroscientist and educator. I enjoy teaching children about science - in particular, how science connects the world around us in ways we don't often think about. I try to encourage children to get excited about learning new concepts and to apply them in different situations. I teach classes on neuroscience, animal cognition, public health, and biology. I also enjoy hosting classes on Star Wars, and special topics of interest, mostly as requested by my own students!
I do animal research in the fields of neuroscience and psychiatry. I have 3 Master degrees - Clinical Psychology, Biopsychology, and Neuroscience. I completed my Masters (MS) and doctorate (Ph.D.) in Neuropharmacology from Texas Christian University and University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC). I then did two postdoctoral fellowships in Neuropsychopharmacology at Harvard Medical School. I was a university professor before joining a global pharmaceutical company.
My teaching philosophy is simple - I try to encourage children to be independent thinkers and to find connections in life about them. This will help them stay excited about learning and be life-long learners.
