Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
"Banned books whisper stories that some try to silence, but in their pages, children find a symphony of voices celebrating the beauty of differences and the joy of standing up for what's right."

Join our "Banned Book Club" and embark on a literary journey through the colorful world of picture books that have faced controversy and censorship. In this engaging online class, young readers will explore the diverse themes, characters, and powerful messages within these banned books. Our interactive sessions will not only focus on reading comprehension but also help develop essential writing skills as students express their thoughts and ideas about the book. The books we will read have been challenged or removed from public school classrooms or libraries across the US.

This class is an excellent opportunity for young readers to:
-Discover thought-provoking stories.
-Develop critical thinking and analytical skills.
-Cultivate a love for reading and literature.
-Enhance their writing abilities through creative expression.

During the 1 hour class session students will listen to the picture book being read, we will have a discussion about the characters and themes in the book. Then we will work together to answer comprehension questions about the book, making sure to properly restate the question and cite evidence from the text. We will play a Blooket game to review key concepts in the book. Students will have a writing prompt at the end of class that will allow them to express their feelings about the characters and message in the book. We will usually have time to review the writing prompt, but students will likely have to finish that on their own time.

Let's celebrate the freedom to read and learn while diving into the pages of these captivating, controversial, and sometimes whimsical tales. Enroll in "Banned Book Club" and explore the power of literature with us!

This class is suitable for elementary students 2nd-5th grade, and welcomes all young readers and writers who are curious and eager to explore the world of banned picture books. Don't miss out on this exciting adventure!
