Class Experience

This eight-week STEAM class invites young learners to create crafts that mirror how nature transforms in autumn. Each class will provide them with the opportunity to create something new. From 3D paper crafts and pointillism painting to food art and origami, this class serves as a wonderful introduction to art.

Students will learn how to transform common household items into masterpieces. These projects will serve as wonderful skill builders and confidence boosters as students experience the inevitable pride of seeing something they've made with their very own hands.

We'll explore art centered around late-blooming fall flowers, animals who shed and grow thicker coats for the coming cooler temperatures, and animals who migrate to warmer climates. We'll also create art inspired by the iconic colors of autumn, including crafts that feature a beautiful kaleidoscope of colored leaves that scream, fall is here!

Projects will vary, however, the following is a sample schedule.

Week 1
3D Sunflowers
We'll have a brief class discussion about sunflower anatomy and its peak blooming season. We'll also talk about scissor safety. Then, we'll use scissors, paper, glue, and actual sunflower seeds to create a 3D sunflower.

Week 2
Multi-Colored Fish
We'll begin class with a discussion about salmon and why they migrate (move from one place to another). We'll also watch a short video and review scissor safety. Then, we'll use scissors, construction paper, and glue to create a multi-colored fish.

Week 3
Miniature Houses
We'll begin class with a brief discussion on underground ant colonies and watch a short video. Then, we'll turn-on our imaginations! We'll use construction paper, tape, and crayons/colored pencils/ markers to create a miniature above-ground ant home.

Week 4
Pointillism Tree
We'll begin class with a discussion about the four main parts of the tree. We'll also watch a short video and talk about the important role trees play in our survival. Then, we'll use paint, cotton swabs, a paint palette, and construction paper to create a beautiful fall tree.

Week 5
Loopy Fall Tree
Building on the discussion from the previous class, we'll talk about why leaves change color in autumn. Then, we'll use scissors, glue, and paper (orange, yellow, red, green, and brown) to create a 3D loopy tree full of colorful leaves.

Week 6
3D Fox Craft
We'll begin class discussing the similarities between how people and animals prepare for colder temperatures. We'll focus on the fox and how it grows a thicker coat to prepare for the cooler temperatures of autumn and winter, just like we pull out our sweaters and heavy coats as temperatures cool down. Then, we'll use construction paper, scissors, and glue to create a fox.

Week 7
Turkey Origami Bookmark
We'll begin this class with a brief discussion on the five senses. Then, we'll turn our attention to turkeys. Turkey's don't have hands, so can they touch? They sure can. Turkeys' beaks and feet are highly sensitive to touch. We'll use construction paper, crayons/markers/colored pencils, scissors, and glue sticks to create an origami turkey bookmark.

Week 8
Seed/Bean Name Art
We'll discuss reduce, reuse, and recycle with a focus on reusing. We'll take dried pumpkin seeds (salvaged from your pumpkin carving waste), color them, and then use them to create 3D name art.

NOTE: Class requires a minimum of 5 students to move forward. If low enrollment becomes a concern, I'll reach out to parents directly with options that include a full refund.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about sunflower anatomy, salmon migration, ant colonies, tree anatomy, why leaves change color in autumn, different fox adaptations, the five senses, and the 3 Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle). Students will also learn how to follow step by step instructions. They will practice fine motor skills and gain experience in using scissors, glue, paint, and other art supplies.

Supply List
Nearly every project will require: construction paper, scissors, and glue sticks or Elmer's glue.
A project specific supply list will be sent a few days before each class meeting.

I’m a lifelong maker. When I was 4 years old, my mom, who stayed home with me, designated Tuesdays as craft day. I was elated! Growing up, we had a set of craft books with a volume for each letter from A to Z. On Tuesdays, I got to pick one craft out of the 1000s available. Then, my mom and I would make it together. I’ve been a maker ever since.

Many years later, I’m a homeschool mom whose love of making has only been enhanced by what I've learned in the many classrooms in which I've had the pleasure to attend or teach.

As an experienced Outschool teacher, I love helping students explore learning in a fun and immersive way. I’m excited to share my love of science and making with your learners. I can’t wait to see what we'll create together.
