Class Experience

US Grade 7 - 10
The Art of Argumentation is designed to help you improve your own thinking and thereby your speaking and writing. Learn to find fallacies in arguments and ways to strengthen your own. Understand what making a strong argument requires. Developed for the middle school and young high school student, this class requires the student to be a proficient reader and a willing participant in group discussions. Advanced readers/writers are encouraged to join.
Class will be led by a Socratic Seminar style of discussion which encourages all participants to speak, write and persuade by learning the three part method of making a strong argument.

Class 1: Understanding and using Logical Appeals
Class 2: Understanding and Finding Logical Fallacies
Class 3: Combining the parts of an argument - Make your own strong argument.
Learning Goals
Students will gain clarity and confidence in both their thinking and structured argument writing. They will also be presenting their arguments in class. This is not a debate class, so we won’t be debating each other. The goal is to have students write and present arguments with clarity.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm Shaheen and I look forward to meeting you all virtually. I've been teaching language arts and the humanities for over 25 years in public, private and charter schools to elementary, middle and high school students. I also homeschool my own four children, and I am an education consultant for other homeschooling families. My expertise is in teaching the humanities and literature classes for middle and high school aged kids. I offer classes in the Socratic Seminar style for kids as young as 4th graders. Holding an M.S. in Education and a certification in teaching ESL, I am happy to bring the love of learning to your kids.
My goals, with teaching students, are to make them life long learners and passionate about education. I enjoy teaching poetry, literature, logic and the classics and I hope to pass this love of language on to my students!
