Class Experience

In the weekly class, join others in this Book Club focusing on the book series: Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi. Currently, there are 9 books in the series. Book #9 is yet to be released!

We will focus on 2 books for this club, The Cloud Searchers: Amulet Book 3 & The Last Council: Amulet Book 4.
It is recommended that learners have read Books 1 & 2 in this Amulet series before joining this class.
Additional sections will be available to continue with sequential books in the series.

The Amulet series is perfect for all readers--those who love graphic novels, fantasy, adventure, and/or are reluctant readers. As an author, Kibuishi writes and illustrates sensory storytelling that hooks all readers from the start! Each book can be standalone, but the cliffhangers always beg readers to get their hands on the next book ASAP!

Being introduced to the series from my own son who "hated reading", I dove into the series myself, loved them (even as an adult), and thus introduced them to kids.

As a previous elementary school librarian, this was a series that couldn't stay on my shelves! Which led me to meet and hear from the author, Kazu Kibuishi who gave me further insight into his passionate work. Even though the books are graphic novels, in-depth themes, character development, and quest-like plots contribute to the worthiness of these books as fiction gold medals.

The FORMAT of the club will be a mix of class discussion, read-aloud, interactive activities along with the teacher-guided presentation. Students are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and discuss openly in the classroom. The discussion will be guided by the teacher and the students.

HOMEWORK:
Students will read at home, and be ready to discuss each week in the book club. A pacing guide is provided.
The Cloud Searchers will be read over 2 weeks/discussed in the first 2 classes.
Then The Last Council will be read and discussed in the last 2 classes.
To fully benefit from each class and discussion the book/assigned pages must have been read before the start of each class.

Reading is required before the first class and students are required to have a copy of the book discussed. Students are welcome to access the work by print, or digital copy.

**Note due to the extensive nature of the class relying heavily on discussion, the class minimum (4 learners) must be met for the class to meet. Notice will be given to parents if there is a cancelation or postponement of a week, etc. I use the Outschool Classroom for all communication.**

Parental Guidance
Per Common Sense Media "Parents need to know that The Stonekeeper is the first book in the Amulet series of fantasy graphic novels. Its prologue features the death of a parent, which might upset some younger readers. A parent is swallowed by a grotesque tentacled monster. Another older character dies later on. Children are in jeopardy throughout, but they are aided by a number of sympathetic helpers. There is no objectionable sex, language, or substance abuse content." The death of the parent is not a lingering theme to the 1st book or the series. However, I am a widow, and my children were young when they lost a parent so I can empathize with children. If need be, I will alert parents of any concerns and/or be available outside of class to continue any sensitive discussion.

As a librarian, much of my day was finding the perfect book for each child. For some, the love of reading doesn't come naturally, so through relationships, intuition, and extensive personal reading of kids' literature, I found each kiddo's gem of a book. It was and continues to be my passion--to inspire the love of reading.
