Class Experience

This is a highly-interactive, discussion-based class that encourages student engagement and conversation. I will structure the class by using a Google Slides presentation to document the key events and moments of Adams's presidency, while also providing significant time for student questions and input during the lesson.

I will also ask the students broader, open-ended questions that task them to think critically and to make connections to current events and contemporary America.

In order to ensure that our discussion remains as orderly as can be expected, and so that every student gets a chance to contribute, this class is capped on the smaller side (8 students).

Topics related to Adams's Presidency that will be covered in the class include:

- the influence of Abigail Adams, John's wife
- the influence of Alexander Hamilton
- The Alien and Sedition Acts
- The XYZ Affair & Quasi-War with France
- The Election of 1800

Students do not need to have prior knowledge on Adams, but as an opening icebreaker I will ask students what they know already know about him!
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the most important moments and events of the presidency of John Adams. With this newly-learned information, they will be able to practice their critical thinking skills by evaluating Adams's legacy and assessing his continued impact on America today.

Supply List
In the days prior to the meeting, I will provide a brief handout that contains guidelines for our discussion on our Classroom page, along with a list of a handful of questions and topics I plan for us to discuss.

I will also share a graphic organizer that students can choose to fill out during the lesson. In addition to students being able to practice taking notes, the organizer can be saved so students can further explore Adams on their own.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Hello, students and parents,

I will be taking an indefinite hiatus from teaching on Outschool (effective the first week of February 2024) in order to focus on completing my PhD, and to spend more time with my growing family. This was a difficult decision to make as I've greatly enjoyed teaching on this platform the past four years. My account will remain open, and I encourage you to message me to check on my future availability. Thank you in advance for understanding. I hope to return to Outschool in the future!

**Profile updated January 2024**

My name is John and I've been working as a history and social studies teacher at a public high school in Connecticut for the past twelve years. I have three college degrees: a BA in History, a MA in Education and a MA in Political Science. I'm also currently working on my Ph.D. in History, which I hope to complete by the end of 2024. Beyond teaching I love to read, hike, play tennis, and watch my favorite Star Wars TV shows and movies. My biggest passion of all, though, is my family: my wife and I have recently been blessed with a daughter and a son--both born within the last three years.

When it comes to the subject of social studies, I've taught it all -- world history, US history, civics, psychology, sociology, international relations, human rights, and American politics. The latter two I've taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut.

Outside of the classroom, I've served as our school's debate team coach, am currently the head coordinator for our school's international travel club (I've traveled to Spain, France, Italy, Costa Rica, South Korea, and China!), and I'm also the faculty advisor for the Student Government Association.

Above all else, I want my students to become life-long learners and to see the value in exploring the subjects and topics in which they have the greatest interest. To that end, I'm committed to meeting the individual needs of all of my students, and to providing a classroom environment that maximizes their potential as learners.

I'm always open to suggestions for new courses, changes/additions to my schedule, or inquiries about tutoring. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any thoughts and questions; I always love to hear from students and parents!

See you in the classroom,

Mr. Lizzi
