Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Many students already have an innate knowledge that the human body can do extraordinary things even if they don’t yet know why or how. If they are in sports they may ask, “Why do inhalers help some people breathe?” or “Why do we feel more energized after eating a snack or a meal before a game?” After stubbing their toe on the door they may ask “Why does it hurt so much more to stub my toe than hit my arm?” These questions and more will guide students through a tour of the human body in this eight week course that meets twice weekly.

In this class, students will explore the digestive system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, nervous system, and musculoskeletal system. As we move through each system, students will engage in home experiments, virtual labs, and games to explore the wonders of the human body! Not only will they learn new content about the human body but they will also engage in the skills of a scientist through asking questions, gathering evidence, and drawing conclusions from data. Below is the breakdown of the topics we will visit during each session.

Anatomy and Physiology 6 Week Course

Learning Goals
Learners will be able to list the levels of organization from cells to organisms.
Learners will be able to identify the structures and functions of the digestive system.
Learners will be able to describe how humans process food and gain energy from nutrients.
Learners will be able to identify the structures and functions of the cardiovascular system.
Learners will be able to model the flow of blood through the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries.
Learners will be able to identify the structures and functions of the respiratory system.
Learners will be able to model the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the blood and in the lungs.
Learners will be able to identify the structures and functions of the nervous system.
Learners will be able to use evidence from an experiment to explain how messages are sent from the brain to the body and back.
Learners will be able to identify the structures and functions of the muscular skeletal system.
Learners will be able to observe the differences between different types of muscle cells (skeletal, smooth, and cardiac) from images under the microscope.
Learners will be able to build a model to represent the body system of their choice and evaluate the strengths and limits of their model.

Parental Guidance
In this class we will talk about topics regarding human anatomy such as blood, bones, tissues, etc. If your child is sensitive to these topics please consider this before signing up!

Materials: bread, plastic bag, vinegar, 2 empty tubes of toothpaste, bag of skittles, timer, 2 different colored markers, access to a printer to print worksheets.

Simple miscellaneous materials for building an at home project. Examples: extra straws, balloons, play dough, clay, cardboard, chopsticks, pipe cleaners, plastic tubing, old toothpaste containers, empty paper towel rolls, etc. This project will be completed in the final 2 weeks of class and materials will vary depending on the body system your child chooses. However, the projects will ideally be build with materials you already have around the house or basic, low cost items from the dollar store.
