Class Experience

Create Thanksgiving 3D pumpkins. Turn pumpkins into place cards for Thanksgiving table, or make different sizes of pumpkins to create an awesome Thanksgiving table centerpiece. Once your student learns the technique, they can create several paper projects!*

Paying attention, following specific steps and directions, actively listening and being able to be proud of efforts will be on our To-Do list!

In this class we will make one pumpkin, practicing our paper crafting skills. We will practice technical skills by using scissors, glue, tracing, folding and designing pumpkins made out of cardstock. We will start by creating a simple shape, a circle, that when folded and glued in a certain way, can turn into different, more complex shape. Once the technique is learned, we will make 3D pumpkin name holders for our Thanksgiving Tables.

*Using this technique, students can make ornaments, big and little pumpkins in different colors, little disco balls to hang from the ceiling, big or small pumpkin 3D cards! Ms. Leslie will show students how to create their family out of different sized pumpkins!

Reviews from Outschool parents: (Scroll down to see the full review and pictures of these fantastic pumpkins!)
-Ms Leslie is wonderful and she strikes again with this new class! In this new class she combines her creativity with hands on confidence coaching that radiates long after the class is done. My 9 y old daughter loved this class and said it was the best introduction to paper art and to the Halloween spirit!

-Another WONDERFUL class with Ms. Leslie. Every time I am amazed how much encouragement and attention my daughter gets in a class with her. As a parent, I look forward to the next time I can schedule a class for my daughter with Ms. Leslie. I am impressed how much she remembers from class to class about my daughter. This class is especially fun because not only are they making a project but Ms. Leslie is teaching a skill that can be replicated. In the words of my 8 year old, "Ms. Leslie is a great teacher. She makes fun projects. Today we made a 3D pumpkin. She made it so easy and fun. She always tells me my work is great and that she would never give up on me."

Supply List
VERY IMPORTANT....BEFORE CLASS:
Please use a mug to trace 6 circles.
Please cut out these circles BEFORE class. *

Cut the circles out in orange or white paper (cardstock is best, but any paper works well)

BRING TO CLASS:
6 paper* circles - cut out
Pencil
Scissors
White liquid glue
Glue Stick (if you have one)
Black marker
Brown paper (brown marker or crayon if you don't have brown paper)
Green paper (green marker or crayon if you don't have green paper)
White paper for the name cards*

*If possible, cardstock is preferred for most paper art projects. The weight of the paper helps the pumpkin to stay upright. If not possible, no worries. Any paper will work - attachment in classroom. (If you have white cardstock, print attachment on cardstock.)

IMPORTANT:
It is very important that the six circles look the same. I ask parents to help us make sure that all the circles are very similar in size and shape!

Please trace the circles with a mug and cut them out BEFORE class begins. Thank you so much for helping with the prep so that we can get right to construction and talking about kindness and being grateful!

Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Oregon State University
I am an Outschool Star Educator, 5-Star ACE Educator, and was recognized as a 2023/24 Outschool Outstanding Educator. I was nominated in 2023 for: Highest Rated Educator. I have 14 years of experience as a Confidence and Kindness Mentor to children ages 7-11. I teach Life Skill classes about Kindness and Confidence, using art and conversation, as well as Writing and Drawing games, designed to encourage creativity, social skills, manners and confidence. I am skilled at inclusion and create a positive, respectful and fun-loving classroom. The comment I hear the most from parents is that I am a very "kind teacher". My classes welcome ESL and ELL students to practice their writing, drawing and speaking in an encouraging environment. (Class is appropriate for CEFR: B1,B2,C1,C2*).

I have a B.S. Degree in Psychology. Prior to working with students ages 7-11, I spent 25 years mentoring and managing in the Financial Services Industry. Fourteen years ago I shifted from Finance to teaching Kindness and Confidence lessons in K-4th grade classrooms. I encourage students to love being their authentic selves, which I believe, helps in every aspect of life. I taught my Kindness and Confidence program in person and online prior to joining the Outschool team. All of my lessons center around gratitude, confidence, kindness and self esteem, with a lot of positive conversation, art, fun and laughter. When your child leaves my class I want them to feel good about themselves, the friends they made and the effort they put into the class. If your student is eager to show you what they created in my class, I did my job right!

Do you remember positive teachers from your childhood? Those adults that made you feel like you were included, seen, heard and valued? That even today, as an adult, you remember because of how they made you feel? That is my goal for every class I teach. I encourage students to speak, draw or write (ideally all three), in a safe and supportive environment and to express themselves and their unique viewpoints! I want students to feel empowered, safe, brave, creative and to let their silly side show when they do projects with me.

Fun fact? I have bungee jumped twice, once forward and once backwards, off the highest legal bungee jumping bridge in the United States. I have skydived. I have gone on three scenic glider rides! I love to learn new things. I love inspiring, motivating and teaching students how to believe in themselves. I love being a paper artist. I love being able to bring kids together to feel their best, while giving their best. I love my family, gardening, building furniture, paper art, problem solving, people who try hard, going on walk and talks, bike rides, Elmo’s positive outlook, good communicators, tennis, playing cards, ping pong, meditation and I looooove belly laughing. Most of all, I love teaching kindness and confidence lessons to kids. -Ms. Leslie
