Class Experience

In this course, students will learn about all different types of energy production--clean and otherwise--from an actual nuclear engineer! Each week we will talk about a different energy production method and talk about how it works, the life cycle of the fuel, byproducts produced, and overall environmental effects of the particular energy production method.

This class will be designed to be a mixture of lecture and discussion. The teacher will provide information regarding the energy production of that week, and the students will be encouraged to participate by discussing the pros and cons of the production type, such as environmental effects, costs, etc. to start thinking about electricity and the environment in a new way.

Each week, we will talk about a different production method. The current plan for the class is as follows.
Week of October 30th: ***NO CLASS***
Week of November 6th: Coal
Week of November 13th: Natural Gas and Petroleum
Week of November 20th: Biomass Fuel
Week of November 27th: Nuclear
Week of December 4th: Geothermal
Week of December 11th: Hydroelectric
Week of December 18th: Wind
Week of December 25th: Solar

After which point, the class topics will restart with the following schedule:
Week of January 1st: Coal
Week of January 8th: Natural Gas and Petroleum
Week of January 15th: Biomass Fuel
Week of January 22nd: Nuclear
Week of January 29th: Geothermal
Week of February 5th: Hydroelectric
Week of February 12th: Wind
Week of February 19th: Solar

After which point, the class topics will restart with the following schedule:
Week of February 26th: Coal
Week of March 5th: ***NO CLASS***
Week of March 12th: ***NO CLASS***
Week of March 19th: Natural Gas and Petroleum
Week of March 26th: Biomass Fuel
Week of April 2nd: Nuclear
Week of April 9th: Geothermal
Week of April 16th: Hydroelectric
Week of April 23rd: Wind
Week of April 30th: Solar

After which point, the class topics will restart with the following schedule:
Week of May 7th: Coal
Week of May 14th: Natural Gas and Petroleum
Week of May 21st: Biomass Fuel
Week of May 28th: Nuclear
Week of June 4th: Geothermal
Week of June 11th: Hydroelectric
Week of June 18th: Wind
Week of June 25th: Solar

I will do my best to keep the course schedule updated to at least one month in advance.

I have a Bachelor's in Nuclear Engineering, so in order to understand the economic and environmental aspects of nuclear power fully, it is important to understand all other energy production types also.
