Beginner Level
This ongoing class meets 2X weekly. I will teach learners phonics, the fundamentals of reading, writing and spelling. "Teach Me to Read, Write & Spell - Small Group Instruction" is great for beginner readers, learners wanting to improve their skills and perfect for ESL learners who want to improve their English skills as a second or third language. Learners will learn short and long vowel sounds, consonant sounds, blending and digraphs, decoding, learn to read, pronounce and spell sight words, CVC words, spelling, syllables, patterns, word families and write proper sentences with correct punctuation. Learners will practice reading out loud individually, paired reading, and practice fluency [accuracy, pace and expression] and reading comprehension. At times, learners will engage in the "popcorn" reading method, read fun, phonetic short plays for beginning readers and have fun learning as they improve their phonics, fluency, comprehension skills and confidence. All learners will use their dry erase magnetic whiteboard for writing. Learners will use their dry erase magnetic whiteboard and magnetic upper and lower case letters younger learners, [see Supply List], writing paper and pencil from time-to-time, teacher read books, and educational games as all learners work through different skills and exercises each week to build a solid reading, writing and spelling foundation. As learners practice the skills taught each week in class, learners will become better and fluent readers, the goal of this class. Each week classes focus on a basic skill/s that will help improve learners' reading ability. Because this class is ongoing, each week's lesson stands on its own. No previous knowledge of previous lessons is required so learners can join at any time and hopefully, stay week after week to participate in this small group instruction and build on their existing skills. Teacher expertise and credentials
Master's Degree in Education from Indiana University
I LOVE teaching children. Before I became a Principal, as a Teacher, I taught in both elementary and middle school/junior high, but I LOVE teaching young learners. I taught kindergarten and third grade for a number of years, as well as every grade in between. I enjoy seeing young learners work hard to achieve new levels, watching them as they begin to read words, write their names and other words, spell and grow into their own self. I especially love seeing their expression when they "get it," the aha movement/s.
I am excited to be present in the Outschool community, working with young learners and helping them develop a love for reading and learning. In "Teach Me to Read, Write & Spell - Small Group Instruction," your learner will be engaged in each activity, have plain ol' FUN learning as they develop a love for reading, learning, achieving and succeeding. So come join us today. Your learner will be glad you did.
