Taste of Jamaica Cooking Camp Part 1 - Everyting Will Be Irie (Great)!

In this fun, upbeat three day cooking class, we will make 4 delicious Jamaican inspired dishes, while learning fun facts about the beautiful island of Jamaica.

Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
Are you ready for some mouth watering Jamaican patties, plantain, Caribbean coleslaw, pineapple coconut cream pie, and refreshing punch? If so, get ready to bring the Caribbean to your kitchen!

In this 3 day cooking camp, students will prepare delicious, Jamaican inspired dishes. By the end of the camp, learners will have learned how to prepare a delicious Jamaican entree, two tasty sides dishes, a yummy dessert, and a refreshing, fruity drink!  This class is for learners who already have some experience in the kitchen and are familiar with using both the stove and oven, as well as a knife. The first two days, students will be guided step by step, as Chef Kim prepares the recipes together with the students. The last day, students will demonstrate the skills they have learned, as Chef Kim orally guides the students step by step in completing the recipes. 

While not a focus, students will be given several opportunities to practice their math skills during the creation of the recipes.  An added bonus to this fun, upbeat class, is that students will also learn a few facts about Jamaica, as well as a few Jamaican patois words and phrases during the camp! Everyting will be ire! (Everything will be great!) Come join Chef Kim for a Taste of Jamaica! We're bringing the Caribbean to our kitchen!

Class will begin with introductions and icebreakers, followed by class rules and kitchen safety. Next, students will review the recipe and check to ensure they have all needed ingredients/supplies. Finally, Chef Kim will guide them step by step, in the creation of the yummy recipes!

Parental Guidance
Please check the ingredients list carefully to ensure that your learner is not allergic to any of the ingredients. Also, safety is extremely important to me. Please ensure that you are nearby and available to help if needed, when your learner is using the knife, as well as the stove and oven.
Supply List
Day 1: Main dish - Jammin Jamaican Beef Patties 
Ingredients/Supplies:
1 lb. of ground beef (IMPORTANT - please make sure your learner cooks/browns and drains the ground beef BEFORE class)
Beef or chicken bouillon powder (or cube)
Vegetable or olive oil
Dried thyme
Salt
Pepper
Allspice
Garlic (minced or powder)
Breadcrumbs
Curry powder 
2 green onions, chopped
1/2 medium onion, finely chopped                                                                                      
2 sheets of frozen puff pastry (be sure they are thawed)
1 egg
Flour
water
Optional: chili powder 
Skillet
Knife
Fork
Large Spoon
Pastry brush
Rolling pin

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to time limitations, the actual baking of the patties will occur after class.

This class is especially special  to me because my husband is Jamaican and my family has traveled to this beautiful island numerous times. Additionally, for the past nine years, my husband and I have been the owners of a catering company that specializes in Jamaican cuisine. Jamaican food is a staple in my home, and I’m excited to share my love of this delicious food with learners!
