30-Minute Class on Closed Syllables: What Your Child Will Learn In this lesson, your child will be introduced to closed syllables, a basic but important concept in phonics that helps with reading and spelling. What are Closed Syllables? The teacher will begin by explaining that a closed syllable is one that ends with a consonant sound. This "closes" the syllable and causes the vowel in the syllable to make a short sound (e.g., the "a" in "cat"). Examples will be given, such as "dog," "sit," and "hop," working into two syllable words like kitten, tablet, and puppet. Your child will split the syllables and hear the short vowel sounds clearly demonstrated. Identifying Closed Syllables Your child will practice recognizing closed syllables in words. They'll be given a list of words and will sort them into two categories: those that are closed syllables and those that are not. This helps develop their ability to spot short vowel sounds and identify patterns in words. Reading and Practicing After identifying closed syllables, your child will practice reading simple words with closed syllables. For example, they might read sadden, stirring, basket, picnic ect. They will also participate in a fun activity where they clap for each syllable in the words, reinforcing the rhythm and structure of closed syllables. Review and Reinforcement At the end of the lesson, we will do a quick review, asking students to recall words with closed syllables and explain why the vowel sound is short in those words. This helps solidify their understanding of the concept Lastly we will play a digital board game together. . By the end of the lesson, your child will have a better understanding of closed syllables, which is an essential skill for improving reading fluency and spelling.

Hi all!
My name is Alisha Lampron and I have been teaching for over 15 years. I graduated from Plymouth State University with my teaching certification for K-8 and a minor in creative writing.
Over the last decade I have worked as a 1:1 aid for students with behavioral needs all the way up to teaching in my own classroom. I taught in a private school for 4 years. My first two years I was the library media specialist then became the schools first ever multigrade classroom. In this unique classroom I taught 3rd and 4th grade combined. It was a challenge, but one that I will be forever grateful for. This truly taught me how to reach ALL my students.
I then relocated to marry my husband and best friend! This is where I found my dream school. I worked at a charter school that focused on experiential learning and real world connections. This was an incredible experience and I learned so many powerful techniques for teaching social emotional regulation, direction instruction and data driven goal writing.
My last experience was in a low income, highly diverse public school. This experience is one that I hold near and dear to my heart. At my public school, I had the privilege of working with multilingual families and challenging my craft to the next level. I would be lying if I said that this wasn't hard. I ate, slept, and breathed teaching there. Being the first teacher in the building most days, and honing in my expertise of reading and language arts.
Growing up, I was diagnosed with a reading disability and through out my career have made it my mission to be the best at meeting my struggling readers where they were at and crushing new goals with them. I am extremely passionate about phonics, spelling, syllabication, and grammar. Even though I am strong in all areas, this is where my heart is. Watching children light up when they begin to believe in themselves and they own abilities.
If you are looking for a passionate, dedicated teacher, then I am here for you. See you in class :)
