Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 8
Spelling helps students to become better readers and writers. But spelling words in the English language is far from simple. That is why this class takes on spelling from multiple angles. Each week we will concentrate on a list of 10 words. We will use a variety of methods to master spelling these words. I will teach students common spelling rules and exceptions. Students will learn to recognize vowel combinations, consonant digraphs, and blends. Different strategies, such as segmenting words, will be taught. Some lists may focus on a specific vowel sound, some might focus on prefixes, suffixes, or pluralizing words. I will also point out homophones to our spelling words if there are any, so students will know to use the correct word, for example, "pizza dough", rather than "pizza doe". Lastly, we will use some good old-fashioned methods such as writing words out to memorize them. Homework will be assigned so students can work with the words throughout the week. We will end each class with a fun game of Kahoot for review. There is no need to download Kahoot, a link will be sent each week.

Week 1: Soft and Hard C & G
Week 2: R- Controlled vowels (Bossy R)
Week 3: Words with the letter X
Week 4: Long E spelled with an I

Hi, I'm Lisa. I live in the beautiful Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada. I have been teaching for 15 years now, first as a classroom teacher, now as a homeschooling mom. In the classroom I taught all subjects to various combinations of grades 1-4 students.

I have a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education. I am a member in good standing of the Ontario College of Teachers.

I believe learning should be fun. I feel education should inspire students to desire more knowledge and encourage them to explore the world.

I love spending time with my family. We enjoy playing board games and card games together. You can also find us watching Survivor together. My daughters and I love to experiment in the kitchen, especially if it involves chocolate. We all love animals, particularly our own cats and dogs. You may notice a cat or two sneaking up on my lap during my classes.

I'm looking forward to seeing you in the classroom!
