In this 5-week stair-stepped approach course, students will use a graphic organizer to outline a strong realistic flash fiction story after learning about plotting elements, then write their realistic flash fiction story. Each week, students will get a video lesson on the topic of the week, which will include several examples to illustrate what's being taught. Week 1Lesson 1Introduction to Realistic Flash FictionStudents will learn what realistic flash fiction is, identify realistic versus non-realistic, and read some examples.Lesson 2Class Expectations & Staying OrganzedStudents will get a brief overview of what to expect from this class, as well as how to use the graphic organizer throughout the class.Lesson 3Tone & SettingStudents will learn the plotting elements tone and setting, look at some examples, take a short quiz, then write their own tone and setting using the graphic organizer.Week 2Lesson 4Character & DesireStudents will learn how to craft a character and give them a desire, then use their graphic organizer to write about their own character and desire.Week 3Lesson 5Conflict & Slap in the FaceStudents will learn about conflict in story. Our characters don't just need trouble, they need a slap in the face (something SO unexpected!). Students will learn how to, then come up with, their own conflict and slap in the face, then note them in their graphic organizer.Week 4Lesson 6EndingsStudents will learn about how to write a solid ending, then complete their realistic flash fiction story outline in their graphic organizers.Week 5Lesson 7Writing and SubmissionUsing their well-outlined graphic organizers as a guide, students will write their realistic flash fiction story and submit it for teacher's review (optional). Students will also be provided a certificate of completion.
By the end of five weeks, students will have written a strong realistic flash fiction piece. Additionally, students will gain a solid understanding of the steps needed to outline and write a story. The graphic organizer provided with this course can be used over and over again for any fiction writing project in the future.
