Summer Writing Camp: Beginner Handwriting Intro to Printing Letters
In this two part course, early-childhood and elementary students learn the developmental milestones and fundamentals of pre-writing and writing.

In Part 1: Students will be assessed based on their ability to trace and copy from a model vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines, and curves. Students will also be assessed on drawing basic shapes (square, triangle, rectangle and circle). In Part 2: Students will be assessed on how he or she was able to apply pre-writing lines, curves and shapes from Part 1 to writing and drawing independently. Students will also be assessed on their ability to draw more intricate shapes (heart, oval, +, X and rhombus (diamond).Class Experience

Beginner Level
This class is led by an occupational therapist and uses some fundamentals and strategies for pre-writing skills for young learners based off of the Handwriting Without Tears/Learning Without Tears curriculum to teach cursive handwriting. In Part 1 of the course this style is great for all learners because it teaches seating positioning, grasping skills of a writing utensil (pencil, crayon, marker), tracing and horizontal lines, vertical lines, diagonal lines and curve lines and basic shapes. In Part 2 of the course we review those pre-writing skills from Part 1 and apply it to writing horizontal, vertical, diagonal and curve lines and shapes independently. By using these basic writing skills, students will have the fundamentals writing skills and strategies to write uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers. Each session will meet for 45 minutes. We will learn the basics of pre-writing and writing through direct instruction, video, on-screen annotations, and practice. After each session, students will complete the worksheets provided to reinforce the lesson. Part 1: Pre-Writing Skills: Seating Position, Grasping writing utensil, Tracing and copying line formations: vertical, horizontal, diagonal and curves and basic shape formations (Triangle, Square, Rectangle and Circle) Part 2: Writing Skills: Review of Pre-Writing skills and independently writing line formations vertical, horizontal, diagonal and curves and more intricate shapes (heart, oval, +, x and rhombus (diamond). Learning Goals
Students will learn appropriate seating position, functional grip of a writing utensil based on age, how to draw a vertical, horizontal, diagonal lines and curves. Students will also learn about tracing and copying basic shapes ( square, triangle, circle and rectangle). In Part 2 students will use the pre-writing skills in order to independently write and draw vertical, horizontal, diagonal lines and curves and more intricate shapes ( heart, oval, +, X and rhombus (diamond).
Other Details
Parental Guidance
Parents may have to demonstrate proper seating positioning and to position the writing utensil in the student's hand for proper grasp. In Part 1 parents may have to provide hand over hand assistance guiding the student's hand to draw lines, curves and shapes. Parents may have to draw the line, curve or shape first then have the student copy and/or trace the line, curve or shape.
