Class Experience

In this 5-day camp, students will learn foolproof and research-based strategies for improving reading comprehension. In each session, we will learn a new strategy that will be taught with slides, games, and discussion. Then, we will read a high-interest, engaging short story. At the end of the class, students will have improved reading comprehension skills and strategies to take with them to middle school, high school, and beyond. I will integrate games, discussion, and interesting stories in order to make the class fun and increase engagement and retention!

Day 1: Four squares strategy + nonfiction article/speech (central idea)
Day 2: List to gist strategy + nonfiction article/speech (summaries of individual paragraphs)
Day 3: SAAC strategy + excerpts from "Treasure of Lemon Brown" (summaries of large chunks of text)
Day 4: Plot map strategy + "The Sniper" (summary of the entire text)
Day 5: Review with "Charles" (all strategies)

These strategies can be used with any text--stories, novels, narrative poetry, etc. Students will receive graphic organizers, lesson slides, and strategy handouts at the end of the camp to use at school or in their own personal reading.
Learning Goals
Students will learn strategies that they can utilize throughout their lives in order to improve reading comprehension. These are even strategies I used in graduate school and even today when faced with a difficult text!

Parental Guidance
Parents, these are common stories that are part of middle school ELA curriculum in public and private schools across the nation, and they do not contain inappropriate themes for this age. However, please look at a short summary of each story before committing to the class. Some stories can be scary or have themes your learner might not be comfortable with.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I am an experienced middle school teacher with multiple certifications, areas of expertise, and awards. I love seeing reluctant readers and writers develop a passion for literature and expressing themselves through writing. We have fun in my literature classes and I believe in student-driven learning: hearing students' voices is more important than hearing my own.
