Beginner Level
In this 4 week book club, students will work in a small group with the teacher for one hour, once a week, to increase reading fluency and comprehension. During our book club we will analyze different texts each week. The goal of the book club is to reduce reading loss and encourage summer reading. This club is perfect for struggling readers in grades 3-5 and English Language Learners. The text used in this course will be high-interest, low-level to give students practice in phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Students are encouraged to read each book before meeting so that they can easily engage in classroom activities dealing with character analysis and story elements.
Learning Goals
Students will learn and apply reading strategies to better read and comprehend text.
Students will know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
Student will read with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

Learning Needs
This club is designed for struggling readers and ELLs currently in grades 3-5. Students may need additional support in phonics and fluency to fully comprehend the text. High-interest, lower-level chapter books will be used.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I love to read and am passionate about teaching reading, especially to struggling readers. I have spent the last 18 years working as a reading specialist with students in grades 3-5. Throughout my career, I have taught students with diverse reading needs. I use current best practices in my teaching, such as structured literacy, to help my students become confident readers. I am experienced in using assessments to drive my instruction in my classroom. I offer one-on-one tutoring classes in reading. I received my undergraduate and graduate degrees from Shippensburg University, in Pennsylvania. I hold a Bachelor's in Elementary Education, a Master's in Education, and a Reading Specialist certificate.
