Weekly group piano lessons, performance opportunities, and enrichment. Lessons are offered to students ages 6 to 18 and tailored to each individuals needs and learning styles.

Beginner Level
This class is an 4 week introductory course designed to allow students the opportunity to find out if they would like to pursue further piano instruction, either in group, private, or partner settings. The course features live group lessons presented by the Instructor, practice assignments for piano technique and repertoire, lesson quizzes for music terms and theory and lesson assessments in which students are required to perform piano assignments during the weekly lessons. Expectations are that students will practice their assignments on their own and use the online discussion board for introductions and general discussion about assignments and progress.
Learning Goals
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of piano playing, including technique, age appropriate repertoire, sight-reading, improvisation, music history, and basic music theory.

Lesson 1: Introduction to Playing
Sit at the piano with proper posture and hand position.
Identify finger numbers.
Play on the two black key and three black key groups.
Identify and play white key notes on the piano.
Read basic rhythmic notation.
Play the required repertoire with proper fingering, notes, rhythm and musicality.
Define given music terms and demonstrate knowledge of the associated music theory.

Lesson 2: Introduction to Playing

Learning will include rote, improvisation, and reading.
Identify and play white key notes on the piano.

Continue reading with pre-staff notation.
Begin to learn music staff notation.
Learning will include rote, improvisation, and reading.

Play the required repertoire with proper fingering, notes, rhythm and musicality.
Define given music terms and demonstrate knowledge of the associated music theory.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Missouri Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Michele Phillips, instructor of piano, holds a Bachelor of Music, emphasis Piano Pedagogy, from the University of Central Missouri and a Master of Music in piano from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Michele also holds a lifetime teaching certificate from the State of Misouri in K-12 vocal and instrumental music. Professional membership includes the National Association for Music Education, Missouri Music Educators Association, American Choral Directors Association, Missouri Choral Directors Association.
Besides The Music Room, Michele teaches 6-12 vocal music at Chillicothe High School. Previously, she taught 7-12 vocal music 17 years at Carrollton High School for. Other teaching experience has included preschool music classes, plus college and high school piano class instruction. In the private studio setting Phillips has experience with individual, partner, and group lesson instruction.
