This zoom camp is aimed at kids ages 7-12. If you've already done our Intro class, great! If not, no worries - we'll go over the basics again. Learners will need a sturdy toy sword - foam works best, but plastic is good too - and a sturdy target to hit, like a pillow in a chair. In our virtual classes, a coach demonstrates all the movements for you and works alongside the learners, so they always have an example to follow. Our classes feature a lot of games to challenge fencers' minds and bodies, because children learn through play. Learners should come ready to exercise and ready to sweat, because we're going to keep you moving! Class outline: Day 1: (Re)Introduction to Olympic fencing - its history and the three weapons Day 2: Stage combat - moves, tricks, and how it's different from Olympic fencing Day 3: Defense and offense - how to block and how to avoid blocks, in both Olympic and stage styles 10 minutes: Greeting, introductions, info on the daily topic 5 minutes: Warmup game 15 minutes: Fencing footwork 20 minutes: Bladework - hitting, defending, and other moves 5 minutes: Closing game No experience is necessary.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the types of fencing and the basic movements for all types of Olympic fencing, plus basic stage combat moves.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
This is an exercise class. Learners need at least five feet by eight feet of cleared, obstacle-free space, and a sturdy toy sword and target. Parents should ensure that learners can move safely in their space and hit their target without breaking either the sword or the target.
Supply List
Something to hit with: a sturdy toy sword, foam is best but plastic also works. Other options include cardboard tubes, a 12" ruler, or any other lightweight, durable object that easily fits in the learner's hand. Something to hit: a sturdy target at the height of the learner's chest. One easy option is to stuff a pillow into a sweatshirt and tie the sweatshirt's arms to the back of a chair. Athletic clothing: close-toed athletic shoes, clothes that the learner can move in Water bottle: we'll be moving, and they'll get thirsty!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
