Class Experience

This is a summer course that focuses on the steps of the writing process, basic editing skills, presentation skills and building a writer's craft. We will focus on Limericks and Haiku Poems. Each class will follow a structured format including modeling, practicing and sharing. I will provide whole group and individual instruction during each class.

Limericks
A silly poem consisting of five lines with a AABBA rhyming pattern. In this rhyming pattern the first, second, and fifth lines rhyme, and the third and fourth lines rhyme. Some students may decide to follow the syllable pattern as well including eight or nine syllables for lines one, two, and five, and five or six syllables for lines three and four. They are usually fun, witty, and silly.

Haiku Poems
Poetry that originated in Japan following a five, seven, five syllable pattern consisting of three lines. They are usually written about nature.

Week 1:
What is a Limerick?
We will learn how to brainstorm and plan ideas for our own silly poems. Then we will write and edit our poems. We will illustrate our poetry and share at the end of the week.

Week 2:
What is Haiku Poetry?
We will learn how to brainstorm and plan ideas for our own nature Haikus. Then we will write and edit our poems. We will illustrate our poetry and share at the end of the week.

The writing process:
Step 1: Brainstorm
Step 2: Plan
Step 3: Write
Step 4: Check
