Class Experience

Though the SAT essay has recently been retired, using the SAT essay prompt is a fantastic way to prepare for high school and college writing assignments. It will prepare students to be more effective writers. They will learn guidelines to writing a rhetorical analysis essay. They will receive instruction on how standardized tests generally score essays and furthermore, principles to writing an accomplished essay.

We will spend the first class discussing general principles for all accomplished essays, whether they are for a standardized test or not. Student can expect to learn about maintaining readers' interest, the three artistic proofs (ethos, logos, pathos), transitions, cohesiveness, and precise word choice.

The final 2 classes will focus on writing an analytical essay.

Outside of class, students will practice writing essays in response to SAT writing prompts. I will give an estimated score for their practice exam essays at the beginning and end of class to show their progress.

At the end of class, students will be better prepared to write effective essays in high school and college.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have scored essays for standardized tests for 2 and a half years. This has included scoring for college entrance exams like the ACT and the SAT. More recently, I have been teaching SAT and ACT essay classes through Outschool. I have read so many essays. So so many essays. Literally thousands of essays.

So I have a pretty good understanding of how to achieve the highest score point on a standardized test essay. Ultimately, I understand the components to fantastic writing and I want to share my knowledge with your clever kids.

I enjoy teaching with energy and a sense of humor. I currently teach ESL to Chinese students. Before that, I spent some time as a snowboarding instructor at Park City Mountain Resort. I get a kick out of teaching and I love my students. I work my tail off to help them achieve their goal, whether it is writing an essay, speaking English, or snowboarding.

I studied English at Brigham Young University and received my Bachelors of Arts in April 2011. While studying, I spent a semester in Europe, surveying art at The British Museum, The Louvre, The Musee D'Orsay and many other world renowned museums. I love the humanities, especially the English language!

So enroll with me for a magical writing adventure. Writing is a life skill. My goal is to help your learner feel like a more confident writer.
