Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
In this highly interactive summer camp, learners will continue to learn how to speak using classical pronunciation and write the ancient language of Latin. This course is the summer camp equivalent of the 5-week class Latin Level 2 for Kids (Ages 9 to 11). The prerequisite class is Latin Level 1 for Kids (Ages 9-11).

Through lively discussions, vocabulary lists or flashcards I will provide, visuals, optional note taking, and imitating my speaking, students will generate and translate sentences—some of them funny. Because about 60% of English has Latin in it, the kids will also see how roots from Latin words in class connect with many English words they already know, plus they will increase their English vocabularies. There will even be the opportunity to invent wacky English words with Latin roots!

The material will include nouns, verbs, adjectives, two noun cases, three noun declensions, and a few high-frequency words. Each day, the learners will have ongoing opportunities to construct increasingly advanced Latin sentences using what they have learned!

I will provide each learner printable material consisting of vocabulary and/or flashcards.

In addition to increasing Latin vocabulary and working with Latin roots in English, here are specifics on what students will do each day (depending on overall learner readiness):

Class 1: Students will use plural nouns in the subject form (nominative case). They will also learn how to convert sentences into questions and begin to answer them with yes and no statements.

Class 2: Students will learn how to make sentences negative. They will add ways to ask questions and answer them, plus further strengthen their use of the verb "esse" (to be). They will also receive a detailed introduction to 2nd conjugation verbs and use them in constructing fun sentences, questions, and answers.

Class 3: Students will begin to organize singular nouns into 1st and 2nd noun declensions and use them in the nominative and accusative cases along with what they have learned thus far.

Class 4: Students will receive a detailed introduction to 3rd conjugation verbs and use them in constructing fun sentences, questions, and answers.

Class 5: Students will continue to apply and develop what they have learned by constructing fun Latin sentences. Depending on readiness, the students will also begin to explore additional noun cases in English and Latin.

I am looking forward to seeing you!

Self-taught in Latin, I taught beginning elementary school Latin as part of my teaching career. I also created and taught a private extracurricular program in Latin and Latin roots for elementary school-ages students. I enjoy instilling self-confidence and motivation in students to learn unfamiliar material in ways that are relevant to their familiar, everyday lives. This involves a combination of discovery, discussion, and practice, with an age-appropriate sense of humor. Establishing a low-risk atmosphere and a comfortable rapport, I enjoy connecting with each individual learner, valuing the unique interests, strengths, and eager curiosity the students bring to class.
