What's included

Homework
2-4 hours per week. Learners will complete weekly activities and projects and will be expected to participate in discussion and interaction with peers via pre-recorded video responses to teacher's prompts. A weekly live interaction will also be offered.
Assessment
Learners will apply their knowledge of how the body works with weekly projects presented via video post by learners (like a show-and-tell of what they made). Learners will be assessed in the final week based on how well they are able to answer questions and apply what they learned about how the body works within the context of their favorite hobby or activity.

Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
This class is a flexible ("flex class") in-depth follow up to the one-time live mini-lesson class named How Does My Body Work? - An Overview for Young Learners. Learners are welcome to enroll for this 7-week in-depth look without having taken the "Overview" class and learners who have taken the one-time class will get to review a bit of what was learned in the mini-lesson class.

Learners will get to dive deeper into the basic functions of the human body from the important role of the skin, bones, and muscles, to the functions of breathing, eating, seeing, and heart-beating! I will cover these basic functions by relating them to everyday objects and experiences. This class will be highly interactive through the use of regular video communication on Outschool and the external resource called Nearpod which will be 1-click away, accessible via a link posted weekly in the classroom.

***HOW IT WORKS***
Students will engage with me, the teacher, as well as their peers by communicating via videos recorded on the learner/family's own time each week. Each week will be broken down into Lecture-Discussion-Activity and Project segments intermixed throughout using the Nearpod interface and Outschool platform. [The Nearpod interface will be a self-paced presentation with embedded teacher presentation/lecture video clips, discussion questions prompting the learners to respond with their thoughts via a recorded video, and "how-to" project videos where I will demonstrate the step-by-step creation of the weekly project/activity]. There will be 1 to 2 hands-on project/activity each week.

In Week 1, for example, learners will be making edible layers of the skin for the project, and for the activity (a virtual field trip) they will be asked how their skin might be protecting them in that scenario. There will also be opportunities for an optional live "show-and-tell what you learned" type Outschool Zoom meeting where learners can interact with me and each other about what they have learned so far. Because of the young age of the learners for which this class is intended, special consideration has also been given to the assignment instructions - I will include either an instructional "how-to" video or voice recording reading the questions to them whenever a new activity is coming up in the Nearpod slides so that they can see and hear the instructions and it is not just text that has to be read.

***OVERVIEW***

Overall, the breakdown of the topics will be as follows (and will follow the same order as they are presented in "How Does My Body Work? - An Overview for Young Learners"):

Week 1 - How Does My Skin Work?
Week 2 - How Do My Bones Work?
Week 3 - How Do My Muscles (& Heart) Work?
Week 4 - Why/How Do I Eat?
Week 5 - Why/How Do I Breathe?
Week 6 - How Does My Brain Work?
Week 7 - How Does My Body Work? - Learners will do a project and participate in a final discussion tying in all the ways their body works together to help them do their favorite things!

All lessons will have Nearpod Lecture Videos with embedded Discussion Questions for learners to respond to and think about. This includes Project/Activity walk throughs with an interactive project board for learners to upload a picture of their projects. Once completed, learners are encouraged to Show & Tell their completed projects in a video message post on the Outschool Classroom page. At the end of week there are virtual field trip slides embedded in Nearpod that help them apply what they learned.

***LESSON BREAKDOWN***

The weekly lesson Nearpod code will be made available on Sundays for the week along with a list of materials needed and the detailed overview of the weekly lesson including number of video and interaction slides, and total video runtime for the week so that families can plan accordingly completing the lesson at their own pace.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! Welcome to the wonderful world that is Teacher Gaby's classroom! In my classroom we will cover topics big and small, far and wide. My background is in Molecular and Cellular Biology which I majored in as an undergraduate student because of my curiosity to learn everything there was to know about the smallest unit of life - the cell! Throughout my life I have always ventured on great learning adventures following my curious mind's desire to learn as much as I could about anything I was even remotely curious about. My most recent learning adventure was in obtaining my Master of Science degree in Organizational Psychology.

I have taught students of all ages throughout my career from 3 to 18 years old! My experience with teaching Middle School Science was a joy as I thoroughly enjoyed every single unit taught in the curriculum from Soil Erosion to Plate Tectonics to Earth and Space! I have also greatly enjoyed volunteering for local children's museums and Girl Scout/Boy Scout programs where I taught kids the principles behind "fun" science and even made everyday life's "boring" science seem like great fun! In addition, I also facilitated financial planning workshops to high school students during my time in Retail Banking where I delved deep into my passion for helping young learners appreciate the importance of "real life" skills. My current experiences teaching online English as a Second Language (ESL) classes have also given me quality insight into the linguistic mind of children as young as 3 years old. And, let me tell you, it is such a wonder to behold!

As someone who considers herself a life-long learner by profession, I love to help others (especially young learners) to explore their interests and discover new passions. Whether it be by learning hands-on, reading, or writing, I believe that children should be given every opportunity to actively learn at a young age when their minds are most curious so that they may cultivate that life-long passion for learning. To that effect, I have always been an avid reader and writer as well as a scientific mind and understand the importance of developing all aspects of a child's learning. I am also a mother of two beautiful daughters ages 2 and 4 who I enjoy teaching new things to every day. With this new and exciting role as a mom I am more excited than ever to share my enthusiasm for learning with other young learners. I hope you will grant me the honor of choosing me as a guide for YOUR young learner on this exciting journey that is life where the adventure IS the learning.
