US Grade 4 - 6
Intermediate Level
In this class, students will learn the concepts of setting, character, plot and details through three children’s book classics – Anne of Green Gables. Even if your child has not read this book or seen the movies or TV shows, they will become very familiar with the story throughout the class. Class 1: (Setting) Students will be introduced to the book, explore Prince Edwards Island, Canada and the fictional town of Avonlea by reading excerpts from Anne of Green Gables and a virtual tour of Green Gables. They will respond to the text through a comprehension activity and then start to build the setting of their character. Class 2: (Characters) Students will learn about the characters in Anne of Green Gables through reading excerpts. They will use critical thinking skills to consider what the descriptions of actions and dialogue contribute to the character development. Then they will consider their own character. Class 3: (Plot) Students will look at a chapter from Anne of Green Gables and discuss the story arc. They will think about the building tension, the conflict, the climax and then create a story line for their story. Class 4: (Details) Students will look at excerpts of text that show great detail and then look at their own stories and see what they can add detail by tapping into the five senses. Class 5: Come bring a snack and share the rough draft of your story. Students will learn how to give feedback using the Oreo cookie method (one compliment, one needed improvement and one compliment) and how to receive feedback with an open mind and discernment. #creative
