Class Experience

Class Experience
The goal of this class is to help current students in grades 4-5 excel in ESL, reading, grammar, and language arts.  My goal is to make class as interactive as possible, and cover the English, Grammar, and Language Arts topics. Reading will be a big part of the class and all students will be encouraged to continue practicing throughout the lessons. Reading Comprehension,  grammar, and language arts will be taught, based on core curriculum standards

Concepts covered in this class with include:


Week 1:
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS
Ice-breaker question and introductions.
Edit a paragraph
Basic parts of speech (noun, verb, pronoun, adjective, adverb)
Reading Comprehension Exercises
Basic Grammar Rules
Write a 2 well-constructed sentences 


Week 2:
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS
Warm-up Activity: Correct a paragraph, and Identify the nouns, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, and 
Regular, Irregular nouns  & abstract nouns
Pronoun and noun agreement
Capitalization
Plurals (-s, -es, -ies) and unusual plurals
Reading Comprehension Strategies
Reading Comprehension Exercises
Complete reading comprehension questions. 
 

Week 3:
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS
Warm-up: Read paragraph and class correct grammar mistakes.  Identify the adverbs and adjectives in the paragraph.
Vocabulary word of the day. 
Strategies to determine word meaning.
Context clues and root words to identify word meaning.
Vocabulary
Reading to identify characters and setting.
Reading Comprehension Exercises

Week 4:

ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS
Warm-up: Students correct a paragraph and identify the grammatical errors. 
Grammar 
Paragraph hamburger method
Use of commas, semi-colons, and exclamation marks
Spelling/Vocabulary
Reading to identify author purpose
Reading Comprehension activity
Write a well constructed paragraph



Week 5:
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS
Warm-up: Short reading & poem. Discuss main idea and details.
Vocabulary word of the week and word meaning
Editing a writing piece
Figurative language (similes, metaphors, alliteration, etc.)
Grammar game 
Reading Comprehension Exercises
Activity - Write a memoir of an event in your life that made you happy. 


Week 6:

Review vocabulary learned
Reading
Parts of Speech & Figurative Language
Metaphors and Simile

Write a poem. 

Week 7
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS
Genres of Literature
Reading - Identify the Theme
Figurative Language & Poetry

Activity - Write a shirt story

Week 8
ENGLISH/LANGUAGE ARTS
Review topics for the class
Identify the characters, setting, problem and climax of a story
Reading Comprehension Review and Final Exercise
