This class is designed to teach students different subtraction strategies. Each week we will focus on a new strategy and expose learners to new options when it comes to solving subtraction problems. Our focus will be on subtraction up to 2 digits although occasionally we will extend with problems up to 3 digits. We will also work on improving mental math abilities with 2 digit by 1 digit problems (occasionally 2 digit by 2 digit). Each class is taught independently of other classes so it is not necessary for learners to attend all classes in order or even to attend a specific number of classes. Classes will be taught in an "I do, we do, you do" format where I introduce a new strategy and demonstrate it, we practice the strategy together and then students have the opportunity to practice the strategy on their own. Class breakdown 10 minutes - mental math 25 minutes - new subtraction strategy introduction and practice 10 minutes - word problem practice (addition and subtraction)

Students will be able to subtract 2 digit problems using a variety of strategies.

As of March 2022, I am taking a short break from teaching on Outschool. We have recently become a foster family and are working hard to welcome a new child to our family. I thank you for your understanding during this time.
Ever since high school, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. Fast forward four years of college and I got a job teaching third grade in Baltimore City, MD. That was the hardest year of my life, but it made me such a better teacher. I taught two years in Baltimore before moving to be near my family in Tennessee. After another eight years teaching, I decided to stay home when we had our twins (three kids in all).
I love my job as mom, but I miss the classroom and teaching children. I am excited to teach some academic courses, similar to lessons I would have taught in school. But I’m also looking forward to teaching some of the things I’ve been able to share with my kids at home: cooking, art, and sewing.
