Grab your favorite stuffed buddy and let’s get writing! Whether you are a beginner that needs a little extra nudge to get the pencil moving or a seasoned writer who journals every day, this class will give you the opportunity to practice your writing craft. We will use our stuffed animals as inspiration! After modeling using my own stuffed buddy, students will be given time to freely write their own stories or observations. We will be using a graphic organizer, as well, to help jump start our creative juices. As we are practicing free writing, emphasis will not be placed on grammar and spelling but instead focus on content and descriptive language. (There will be time for editing/revising in another class!) This class will also be a safe space where students can share their writing with peers to build self-confidence and practice giving/receiving positive feedback. **This class is intended for students who are entering 2nd-5th grades. **
Learning Goals
With this “low stakes” and personal writing activity, my aim is to reduce students’ anxiety around writing and encourage using writing in their daily lives.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Sarah, and I have been an elementary educator for 18 years. I am especially passionate about children's literature and have developed a love for teaching reading strategies/fluency and writing to young learners.
My teaching career began in 2002 when I graduated from Virginia Tech with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education and Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. After teaching for 6 years as a 3rd grade classroom teacher, I slightly changed course and pursued a career as a librarian. I became a Special Education Assistant for 2 years while I worked on my schooling and eventually earned an additional Master's Degree in Library Media K-12 from Longwood University. My last 7 years as an educator have been in an elementary library setting, teaching students aged preK-5th grade. I am also the mother of a 5th and 8th grader who like to act as "trial run" students for my new Outschool classes!
Engagement, interaction, and fun! The best learning takes place when students are fully invested and excited about the topic that is being taught. My teaching style is a combination of modeling, critical thinking, student participation, independent practice, and sharing...and sometimes a little silliness may sneak in!
Take a peek at my reading and writing classes below. I look forward to seeing you soon!
