Class Experience

As a dance teacher and a professional dancer, I know how important it is to stretch before any activity and to strengthen muscles to help prevent injury and prepare the body for any activity.

Stretching is the slow sustained lengthening of the muscles while strengthening is repeated muscle contractions until the muscle becomes tired. This class will encourage the students to understand that difference between stretching and strengthening muscles and why they are both important. We will also cover how stretching lengthens muscle tissue and increases flexibility both of which will allow you to perform strength building exercises with greater ranges of movement which makes the exercises more effective.

80% of all exercises or movements will have multiple technical levels to accommodate for students with injuries or those who need a more advanced method. Students are encouraged to push themselves on their own physical level.

Each class with start with a 10 minute warm up period with the focus of stretching and warming the muscles. Then a 25/30 minute period focusing on more intense stretches and strengthening exercises for specific muscles as well as over all muscle groups. Each exercise with include a demonstration as well as information covering what muscles with exercise will cover. Finishing with a 10/5 minute warm down to protect the muscles from injury.

All students are recommended to wear clothing that they can easily move in. No other resources are required. Hand held weights, resistance bands, blocks, and mats can be used with the stretch and strengthen class at the preference of the student. Any injuries or issues with exercises should be made known before class. Questions are encouraged.

Learning Goals

Students will learn dynamic stretching and how stretching can benefit the body before exercise. They will learn proper forms for each movement or exercise and which muscle groups are being used. Students will learn the difference between long lean muscles verses compacting muscles and how altering exercises can benefit one or the other. They will learn how to work hard toward their physical health.

Parental Guidance
Students will need an open workout space for this class and a water bottle for hydration. Shoes are not required but please be aware of the floor you will be working out on (socks on hardwood may not be a good idea). Injuries can occur from overstretching or overworking the muscles and without proper supervision. Students are encouraged to work on their level, to speak up if an exercise is too challenging, and to inform me of any previous injuries they may have.

Georgia Teaching Certificate in Mathematics
Hello!
I am Ms. Kate McMahon. I am a certified teacher in 6-12 grade mathematics in Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Mathematics Education from Kennesaw State University. I have been tutoring students in math since 2016 as well as teaching dance since 2013.
I understand that mathematics is not always easy for everyone to learn, and can be sometimes even harder to understand. Many students do not see the connection that math has to everyday life. I strive to teach my students not only the topics and their connection to previous and future material but also how they connect to our everyday lives. The topics I will offer will consist of Algebra, Geometry and will contain computational skills, mathematics discourse, and problem solving.
Dancing is something I really enjoy. I have been dancing for over 20 years with experience in a variety of styles. I have been teaching dance since 2013 to students from ages 3 to 21. By teaching dance, I have found how much being active and exercising can be beneficial to students no matter their age.
Not matter the class or topics, I want all my students to succeed.
