Chess naturally encourages the development of the three main executive functioning skills: planning ahead, impulse inhibition, and flexible thinking. Students practice these skills as they develop a plan, consider their options, and adapt to their opponent's plans. Students will develop an awareness of executive functioning skills and strategies for using them during chess or other activities. Students will develop an appreciation of chess. Students will naturally practice social skills in a supported setting.
I've been playing chess for twenty years and using chess as a teaching strategy for two. I also have been working with middle school students on executive functioing strategies as a peer mentor for other autistic students for over a decade.
