Class Experience

Set in the fictional town of Hawkins Illinois in the 1980s Stranger Things follows the adventures of three teenagers who encounter a mysterious girl with supernatural powers. The teens make it their mission to solve the case of the disappearance of their friend Will Byers. In the third season the kids are growing older and are dealing with relationships. Meanwhile there is a new mall in Hawkins and with it the town is facing growing political upheaval. The Mind Flayer is back again but this time it has chosen a more dangerous host. There are also Russian spies in the mall posing a brand new threat to our heroes.

In this class we will come together as fans of Stranger Things to discuss one episode of the hit Netflix series per week. All viewing should be done outside of class. This class will cover only the third season of Stranger Things. Future classes will cover the other seasons.

Each student will be asked to share what they liked or didn’t like about each episode. I will then talk the class through a scene for scene retrospective as I break each episode down via guided discussion. This is the same approach I use for my other film studies classes on Outschool. A sample schedule has been listed below. This class will be offered throughout the year.

Class 1 Chapter One: Suzie, Do You Copy?

Class 2 Chapter Two: The Mall Rats

Class 3 Chapter Three: The Case of the Missing Lifeguard

Class 4 Chapter Four: The Sauna Test

Class 5 Chapter Five: The Flayed

Class 6 Chapter Six: E Pluribus Unum

Class 7 Chapter Seven: The Bite

Class 8 Chapter Eight: The Battle of Starcourt

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a bachelor's degree in educational studies and more than 20 credits towards a masters degree in history. I have 5 years teaching experience including teaching film studies courses. I have been a Stranger Things fan since it first premiered in 2016. I also have lived experience having once been in the same age group as the teenagers portrayed on this show, though I am an adult now I can still relate well to this age group.
